You know what sucks most about having a really long story? Forgetting an important detail and digging through the whole fucking story to find what was said. It could be something small like someone's gender (small in my opinion) or something major like what the mcguffin was supposed to be used for. In this case, it's a little bit of back story about Blast Shield. I have no idea what chapter it was in, I have no idea how far into its chapter it is, but I do know that it might be important.

How about making a checklist where you can look up everything you need to know for your story in short words.
You could make a description of the character, the history and some additional facts, like relations to other characters. It is a lot of work, but you can look up everything you want afterwards without going back and searching for the chapter.
Just a thought that might work.
