HEALTH AND FITNESS: Time to be active · 7:16am Jul 7th, 2014

Routine physical activity is vital for wellbeing and good health and fitness. Despite the clear advantages less than half of Americans meet with even minimal recommendations for other and exercise action.

As a means to get folks moving, they can be supported to include physical activity into their daily routine. Including walking for their destination and getting the stairs instead of the lift or parking farther away. But the understanding that these "measures" take more than the less active option may function as a disincentive for a lot of people.

Yet, research indicates that this is false. Studies conducted by my students at USC Aiken demonstrate that these productive types of transport don't always take longer compared to options that are less active. The truth is, generally the manner that is energetic is faster!

In one study, we analyzed the time needed to ascend and descend one floor using lift or the stairway in a building. The results demonstrated the time needed to take the lift was around twice that to use the stairway (36 seconds versus 16 seconds).
The lift would not be slower if you had been going down or up several floors. But let us be honest, very few buildings in our region have enough floors to be useful.

The time needed to park and at shops was not greater than the time needed to look for a parking space closer. Driving around trying to find an area that was closer meant that it took a mean of three minutes. It took folks about half if they walked and parked farther away.

These studies indicate that taking a couple of extra measures on the stairway or in the parking lot is really faster than using the lift or driving and parking closer. These details might help folks determine to be active. And these little changes can lead to further alternatives that are healthful.

Needless to say, just using the stairs in stead of the lift or discussing the first parking spot that is accessible is not going to replace routine exercise. But making action part of your regular routine is a significant part developing a lifestyle that is healthful.
