Why, as an American that does not study a science in college, do I use the metric system in stories.

Inches: Cool.

Miles: Fine.

Feet... uhhh... hmm... call them feet or hooves? Wait, would calling them hooves make the readers make sense? Or maybe I should use the phrase "hands" instead, because that's what we use to measure horses in the real world. Wait... hands!? What am I smokin'!? fughrauigjraiojioa!!!!
