I'm sitting here, it's midnight, and I'm reading some SCPs. Christ, a lot of these are really, really stupid. Someday I'm gonna write one called SCP-PNK about Pinkie Pie being an SCP that they can't contain, but all she wants to do is party with them, make jokes, and eradicate all the most evil SCPs by laughing at them. In the other window is ETC Chapter 18, and I'm finishing up the changes that my editors suggested. And doing this... I dunno, I'm just having this weird sort of flashback to when all of this started.
Just over two years ago when I began working out, I would go swimming at a downtown lap pool. While swimming, my mind would often wander, and I would find myself thinking about ideas for pony stories. At the time I was just considering getting into pony writing, given that I was really into the show and the writing community was getting stronger and stronger, not to mention that I had become an editor on Background Pony.
When swimming, two ideas were sort of my "main" ideas, the ones that I would think and plan out the most. One of them was a story about Cheerilee overcoming her fear of being exposed as a fraud—this would become my first story, Smiling Flowers. The other idea was a short one-shot about Octavia having the Gala ruined, only to be brought out of depression when her best friend Vinyl Scratch, who was secretly moonlighting as the controversial street artist "Flanksy," brought her along and told Tavi to try painting to relieve some stress. This was a small seed of a story that would eventually turn into the 17+ chapter monster that is Exit Through Canterlot.
That was two years ago. Now here I sit, closer to the end of ETC than I ever thought, and it's kinda amazing me. Chapter 18 can be considered a bridge... a bridge between ETC and the end of ETC. Chapter 19 is the true ending of ETC, followed by an Epilogue. The Epilogue has undergone changes since the beginning of ETC, and has changed as recently as a few months ago when I decided to add in a little detail regarding... well, you'll find out. It's just amazing to me how close I am to actually finishing a project the size of ETC.
The current plan is that when I finally do post the last chapter of ETC, I will post both it and the Epilogue at the same time. I dunno why I felt the need to talk about this, but I guess it just sank in that the next time I open a word document to start writing ETC, when I write "The End" it will be the end of it. I'll be done with it.
It's a thought that's a little scary, a little relieving, and super, super exciting. I have a lot of stuff planned for upcoming stories, and I'm itching to start branching my writing out again.
But before that, we still gotta finish up the Tale of Tavi. I'm excited for the end of ETC... and I certainly hope you are, too.
