How is that some stories get posted and within a day they're viewed by thousands, and then others (like mine) sit in the dust? I guess it's really just luck when you come right down to it, but it's kind of odd to me. I would be lying if I said that I wasn't at least a little bit envious of those who get high views and ratings really quick; I want to share my narratives with as many people as I can.
I don't really know how they chose the stories in the box at the top but I mostly just read those unless I'm bored enough to search through the archives. If you can get your story there, more of the new readers would probably check it out.
All I could really advise is that you should... keep writing it
Did you post it to EqD? Did they say anything?
I really have no idea how the "top" stories are chosen. My guess is that a number of different factors go into it. How popular you are, your number of watches, the number of people YOU want, how many stories you already have, how many comments/views your stories have already, the subject/plot of your story itself...all of that. Some people just get luckier, I suppose. Don't take it so bad. I started off slow, too; if you keep at it, eventually you'll get your readers.
I'll be honest, I feel the exact same way sometimes.
I'm just happy that anyone at all bothers to read mine, though, but I guess that's just me.
What seems to be a pattern for my story is that for every chapter update I offer, my viewcount seems to be higher than on any other chapter I released before. Fore example:
Release Chapter 1: 150 views.
Release Chapter 2: 200 MORE views. (350 total)
and so on.
(If that didn't make sense, tell me. I'm slightly confused myself. )
I think people look for more completed/almost completed stories so they don't have to wait on the author, but I can't be too sure. All I can really do is agree with Tails and say you'll get your viewers eventually.
I JUST put up a story last night. I know I'm not known and that I'm new to the site and all, still. It's not a bad story. At least, I don't think it's bad. Your stories and a couple of over's stories are what wanted me to make some. The whole "fanfic, romance, comedy, sad" stuff. But I guess it just takes time. =/

I don't know; I guess it also has to do with popularity. Recently that really infamous and gory Rainbow Factory story was posted here, and it almost immediately was mentioned at the top.
*Le sigh* I'll never be famous.

Don't worry about it, man. If you really want some help, just drop by the IRC. (Bottom of this site, click chat room)
Lot of really good authors there who would be glad to help. They've been helping me with mine, and I think I'm making a lot of progress.
I know how the top are chosen.
All the top stories have at least 10 ratings, and the story has a score of 4.7 or higher.
Oh, well that leaves me in the dust; I'll never be able to do that.
