Hail to the King! · 3:57am May 16th, 2014
I just got back from seeing Godzilla tonight.
Oh.
My.
GOD(ZILLA)!
Okay for anyone who might be worried that this was going to be another Roland Emmerich film? Put those fears to bed. While the film did focus more on the humans than I'd like, Godzilla was very well represented and looked and felt like Godzilla. I had very few complaints other than that I thought we needed more screen time to be devoted to the Kaiju themselves. But even then, they were still what drove the film.
Godzilla's new look is very much inspired by the classic Toho designs, though I found his feet to look very odd. But the rest of him? Yeah, that's how a CGI Godzilla should look. Ken Watanabe proves why he seems to have the damn Midas Touch, cause he really plays his role well, and it seems like this movie is going to be gold. (For those who love Godzilla easter eggs, pay very close attention to the name his character has in this movie.)
There were some great easter eggs in this movie. I won't spoil them for you. But just know that some of them are 'blink and you'll miss it' deals.
The ending is fantastic. Godzilla's standing with humanity is left ambiguous to some extent, but one thing is for sure....and this is a minor spoiler/easter egg and I know I promised I wouldn't spoil them, but this I just can't resist. When you have the news calling you both the King of the Monsters and a savior....well, I think that while the relationship between Godzilla and humanity might have been somewhat rocky at the start, I think it'll get better as time goes on.
I can't wait to see what he does next.
