I Loved the Season Finale (Spoilers, Natch) · 5:26am May 13th, 2014
I did. Fantastic new (old) villain, wondrous development, moving the plot of the whole series forward...
People have decried Twilight's "I don't do anything important!" as selfish whining. It kinda is. It's selfish. But still, I know I occasionally look at my life and ask "What here matters? Am I doing stuff with my life that's important? I kinda want what I do to mean something." I think Twilight felt the same way. Everypony made a big deal out of her being a princess, she fought against herself until she felt that she was ready, and once she was ready there was zilch to do. Kind of a let-down, there, Celestia.
Tirek was kinda the villain Sombra should have been. I felt like I knew a thing or two about the guy by the end. I felt like he had decent presence.
How did Tirek defeat Discord so easily? He eats magic, duh.
You can twist my arm all you want, but Rainbow Power as a concept is kinda awesome. They all have superpowers now. Maybe we can get another action scene like Twi vs Tirek. Maybe.
I shed a few tears when Cheese Sandwich appeared. He's a character that's actually really resonated with me. Coco Pommel also gleaned a tear, but that was more because she's so cute and the moment was so well-done.
Discord finally received the development i'd been waiting for all season. It was pretty awesome that they managed to build this episode off of That Episode with the Glass of Water.
So you know what's really mind-blowing? The box that came out of the Tree of Harmony? It was a SEED. When that hit me, it was like one of those "What if X" memes. It required care, energy, and focus to mature into the Palace of Friendship.
I think the-powers-that-be got something really right when they gave the palace six thrones.
It may be my favorite finale, though season two has my favorite opener.
Yes, the Rainbow Power designs are a little silly. Oh well. Fluttershy and Rarity are still pretty cute.
Almost forgot: Princess Song! Princess Song! Princess Song! AhAHAHAHAHA!!! SQUEE!
Wait, what? All season long, the biggest complaint from the analyst community is that Twilight hasn't been living up to her princess title, and when she starts wondering about that, they call it whining? Someone's calling the kettle black.
Actually, it's seven thrones. Spike has one, too.
I give major props to Tia for her strategy of giving Twilight all the alicorn magic. Say what you will, but I think she knew that the alliance between Discord and Tirek wouldn't last. One of them was going to do some backstabbing, and there were going to be trust issues. That being the case, it would grant Twilight enough time to get used to her new powers and launch a counterattack.
R.I.P. Golden Oak Library. You shall be missed.
I loved the fact that Discord learns the meaning the empathy in this episode. It's so easy to play the troll when you have no idea what being trolled feels like, don't you think?

The only thing that keeps me from pulling my lips back is the assumption that different people are complaining about different things. Only just as loudly. At that assumption, I can just shrug.
Really? I counted six. I'm not saying that it wouldn't be even more brilliant, i'm just saying I wouldn't have put it past the powers-that-be to only put six in. I thought Spike was just sitting on a throne for fun, probably Rarity's.
To me, it would have been better if she'd given Twilight the power and then gave her instructions to pack up her friends and get the heck out of Equestria. As it was, she was just a beacon leading to Ponyville. And then her friends got captured. I dunno, it came together nicely, it was just a little strategically unsound all told.
And I would never count on Discord to do what's expected.
But it's been replaced with the Tree of Harmony Junior: The Tree Palace of Friendship! Whoo! Sparkly crystal everywhere!
I'm gonna miss the library so dang much.
You know, I thought I was being all brilliant when I destroyed the library in Sonata. I posted that chapter the very day the episode aired. Le sigh, great minds think alike.
It was nice to see his "reformation" take place over a longer period of time, that's for sure. Fluttershy, it seemed, just planted the seed.
Nope, it's seven. There's a miniature throne next to Twilight's.
