Um...wow. · 4:24pm May 10th, 2014
AVAST!! There be spoilers ahead! Proceed at your own peril, for secrets await ye with big, nasty, pointy teeth!
You have been warned!
Okay, now that I've gotten that out of the way--and for some reason wrote like a pirate--let me reiterate what I said in the title of this post: wow. I was very worried about the season finale. Something about it was gnawing at me deep inside, making me worry about what was to come.
I feel so foolish for not trusting Megan McCarthy.
Twilight's Kingdom was a great two-parter. It had drama, action, character advancement...pretty much everything you could ask for in a story. And it even had a princess three-way...duet. Triet? Whatever. Nonetheless, I loved it. Tirek was a great villain, who not only used might but cunning to achieve his goals, and he had a solid backstory, right down to the Cerberus part. It was even cool when he threw the princesses into Tartarus as punishment, reflecting what they did to him. Loved it.
But let's get down to the best part: alicorn power! DAAAAAAAAMMMN! The fight between Twilight and Tirek was something to behold. I saw Megan McCarthy mention that she was told Twilight couldn't punch Tirek in the face. Would have been nice to see, but I think she made up for it with everything else. Honestly, that was a better fight between two super-powered beings than the last Superman film by miles. I felt there was a raw display of POWER in that fight, and woe betide anypony who got between them. (Quick note: don't fuck with Twilight's library. It pisses her off.)
My fear for the episode stemmed from reading that the other princesses gave up their powers to Twilight, and I had a--yes, unfounded--fear they wouldn't get them back. Instead we got a display of what the power of four alicorn princesses is really like. I couldn't have been happier.
I wasn't even that bothered by the "rainbow power" we all knew was coming. Yes, they still looked cheesy to me, but...eh, they made some pretty good lemonade with the lemons Hasbro tossed them.
Overall, this ranks up there with my favorite episodes of the series.
Now, we just have to wait another year for new ones...
That was... AWESOME!
Anyone else get a distinct DBZ vibe from the Twi-Tirek throwdown?
The effects were nice as well. I just didn't like the fact that now she has her own castle.
Quartet as in 4
Twilight sang too
2096714 I was specifically talking about the three princesses who sang in unison, but you are very right! Now, to find the best version of that song and the best remix of it... The quest never ends.
2096451 I'm playing the "wait and see" card on that one. I liked how they handled Twilight becoming a princess, so hopefully they'll have good stories about the castle, too.
...besides, it's already prompted a story idea from me. (Coming soon to a FimFic near you!)
2101168 It sort of ruins my story, but it just went from subtly hinting that it was an alternate Equestria to blatantly describing it.
did it match up to your written descriptions of battles which are always difficult for me to follow? (as a general rule for myself not cause you wrote them poorly....)
2113213 Hey, fight scenes are tough to write. It's hard to create the visual drama that you see on screen in the same way. Even writers who are excellent at it seem to pale compared to the visual presentation of things. I still think of the battles in the Lord of the Rings novels, and marvel at how truly impactful they were on the big screen. I know they were altered some for the movies, but they still managed to create a much larger feel than I got from the novels.
But, shorter answer, yes. I thought it did a great job of showing the power of the characters involved.
