Somedays, I sit, looking at the stars. I muse and wonder. I meditate and reflect. And I find the miracle in a new day of life. Especially since I swallowed so much glass the day before.

The best reference in the comics yet · 11:52am May 9th, 2014

Okay, okay. I know. I get them LATE. I only just got my volume 3 of the comics today because I wait for the compilation books and order two together (pony tales and the regular series) through Amazon, and I was reading through only just now.

This reference comes from the story arc about how Shining Armor was a super nerd in school, and he put on this performance to try to win over Cadance's heart.

The lyrics to the song he sang went like this:

"I love pretty pink mares, they make me feel so good!
I love tri color hair, it makes me feel so bad!
When they're around they make me feel like I'm the only colt in town...
I love pretty pink mares they make me feel so good!"

Being an aging hipster well-traveled person of eclectic taste, I instantly recognized it. And I realized how incredibly... edgy it was.

I'm not sure how many other people got the reference, because it comes from a band that isn't exactly too modern or too popular, but...

The original song is a song about pedophilia.

It's a song called 'Little Girls' by Danny Elfman (The Simpsons theme, Batman Theme, Mission Impossible Theme, Men In Black Theme, Black Beauty Theme, Nightmare Before Christmas entire Score, Every Tim Burton movie ever, etc.).

More precisely, he did this when he was with his old band Oingo Boingo. Now, it's a GREAT song, and I really like it, much like anything else around the time this one song was released, which was in 1989.

Here's a snippet of the original lyrics just so you can see how amazing this is.

I, I, I love little girls, they make me feel so good
I love little girls, they make me feel so bad
When they're around, they make me feel like I'm the only guy in town
I love little girls, they make me feel so good

They don't care about my one-way mirror
They're not frightened by my cold exterior

They don't ask me questions
They don't want to scold me
They don't look for answers
They just want to hold me

Isn't this fun?
Isn't this what life's all about?
Isn't this a dream come true?
Isn't this a nightmare too?

It's not even a SUBTLE song about pedophilia.

God, Shining Armor.

You're a bad boy.

They got Patrick Stewart to sing that on National Television. :P

Oh. My. God.

That's fucking brilliant of them.

I think this is why that issue caused a big uproar in the fandom. Personally, I didn't give two shits, I'm just glad they're referencing something as obscure (these days) as Oingo Boingo.

And the reference to Bruce Springsteen a few pages later.

This is amazing - as someone who wasn't actually alive when this song came out and loves music from that time period, thank you for pointing out an awesome reference and showing me a pretty good song to boot. :pinkiehappy:

Check out Oingo Boingo's 'Dead Man's Party' album. I personally think it was their best. MANY classic tracks there.
(Including Weird Science, which later went on to be the theme for the short-lived sitcom of the same name)

2092095
Thanks for the suggestion - I think I'll go listen to it now in fact!

2092099
Tell me how it goes!

2092103
Still on the first song - but it's a great song!

I listen to music a lot - I currently have ~125GB of music, and that's not counting my dad's stuff. So it means a lot when I say that this album has become one of my favourites on first listen. Thank you for introducing me to an incredible album and band. You're awesome. :pinkiehappy:

2092271
That's a LOT of music. And no problem, dude! You'd probably wanna get their 'best of' album next, hehe. ^_^
They are certainly a challenging sound, but there's something about them I really dig.

Maybe it's all the death and stuff. #emo

The slightly bouncy music with the "#emo" lyrics works pretty well, it's true.

2092450
Well, this was a fun conversation. And to think, it all started with pedophilia. It really brings people together, doesn't it?

That entire arc was hilarious. I seriously loved every page of it. The adventure arcs are mostly just alright (with the exception of the current arc, which is probably the best adventure so far), but I massively prefer when the comics go full-on comedic for an issue or two.

Oh my. More fuel for the wincest fics, now with 20% more canon. :twilightoops:

Those sneaky comic writers can get away with lots of awesome stuff!

What a coincidence that you bring it up, because I just rediscovered that song recently, and I've been completely unable to get it out of my head.
And I bet it would probably leave my head faster if I weren't enjoying it.

Cadance is a very special mare, and only the perviest of the nerds is good enough for her.

2095095 I regret absolutely nothing.

Incredible. I really ought to buy and read the comics one day so I can see this for myself. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised considering the writers have dipped into adult references before like The Big Lebowski and Trainspotting. But this still warms the cockles of my old heart. Not just that they dared to riff Little Girls, but that they also have good musical taste. Because, hey, subject matter aside it is a good song. Makes me wonder what alternatives they could have gone with.

- Whenever Shining Armor sees a photo of Cadance he turns Japanese, I think he's turning Japanese, I really think so.

- Shining Armor thinks of all the royal duties he's missed. But guarding ponies was never quite like this. Got it bad, got it bad, got it bad. He's hot for princess.

- Cadance is a fast machine, she keeps her motor clean. She's the best darn pony Shining's ever seen. She has the sightless eyes, telling him no lies. Knocking him out with those Equestrian thighs.

- Does Cadance walk? Does she talk? Does she come complete? His throneroom throneroom angel always pulled him from his seat.

So many choices, and such riches aplenty.

She doesn't want anypony else. When she thinks about him she... um... gets touched? :scootangel:
You know, metaphorically...

I was only just born in 1989, so I wasn't all that familiar with the music of the day. When I briefly listened to the stuff from the year in my quest to get more musical education, I really liked the Stone Roses and Pixies stuff, as well as songs by The B-52s, Public Enemy, Depeche Mode and Tom Petty. Not a whole lot of familiarity with Oingo Boingo, but they have to be better than the Beastie Boys, right?

I think all forms of music do have something to contribute to society.

For example, Miley Cyrus contributes fire and eternal pain.

But nah, Oingo Boingo is pretty specific stuff. I really like them, but I've always liked alternative music, and you can't get more alternative than Oingo Boingo (also macabre-type stuff). I actually like a few Beastie Boys songs, too, so it's hard to say, haha. I'm quite a fan of oldschool rap and hiphop, especially those which are quite clever with the wordplay and aren't necessarily about 'skeeting' and shooting cops and what have you. But I definitely prefer the original Fresh Prince and the sugar hill gang to Beastie Boys still.

And from the few you've mentioned, it's a good start to the music of that time!

2167906
Well, I like plenty of older hip hop too, like Public Enemy and Eric B. & Rakim. But all I get out of The Beastie Boys is shouting and sneering and three dudes acting like complete fuckwits. I have no idea how they're considered classic artists or influential. And it's not like I didn't give them a shot, like an earlier assessment of Pixies I did before I listened to Doolittle. I listened to Licensed to Ill and Paul's Boutique and was rewarded with nothing.

I think Oingo Boingo might be a bit too geeky and silly and not influential enough to get much notice on the sites I take recommendations from. But that's just my assumption from what little I know about them.

2168003
They were considered classic because back then, and in comparison to what the ideals of hip hop were, here were three incredibly white dudes who managed to break into the scene and have some very unique tracks that handled a lot of sampling. Their mixes were regarded as inventive and creative at the time, and considering how many songs they sampled for each track, each of them coming together to form a cohesive whole, that is what was appreciated. This was during the era when they pushed out 'Paul's Boutique'. I also believe that they had some very clever lyrics, as well. For the time, it was on par with what we might regard some of Eminem today in terms of wit. And of course, you have to respect that this was in 1988. However, as of all artists, they sort of faded after that, and nothing recent compares.

And for me, personally, I think I only liked 2 tracks on Paul's Boutique, and one of them was 'Hey Ladies', but only because it was curious with the switch-up in the middle.

Oingo Boingo was considered very niche back in the day, yes. They aren't mainstream, and as you know, nothing mainstream gets any credit ever. Justin Beiber will always be more popular than The Decemberists, for example. What it is about Oingo is that after the band, Danny Elfman then went on to become the most amazing composer ever. He's up there amongst John Williams and Hans Zimmer. Go wiki him and see his body of work. It's incredible. He's written themes that EVERYONE in the world has heard.

Alright, yes, that is a fair assessment. I might give them another shot sometime when I'm feeling generous. Also, I don't think that fading from memory or popularity or relevance is necessarily linked with the artist running out of ideas. David Bowie's latest album was pretty good, Bob Dylan's been making a comeback recently, and Nick Cave's been going strong for thirty years now.

I'm starting to see a sort of connection between Oingo Boingo and Cave's old punk band, The Birthday Party, in that they're both cult outfits whose founders went on to do other stuff for the rest of their lives. Difference is, the only Nick Cave soundtrack that I'm familiar with is in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It's a movie I hope to see sometime soon.

2175943
Oh, I do love Nick Cave. I really did like his old stuff. He has a real unique sound, doesn't he?

2182966
Yeah, he does. I was first introduced to him via his Grinderman albums and the newest Bad Seeds release, Push the Sky Away. I really like that album, but it's not quite what you'd be used to from the earlier ones. It has more of a quiet, tense and menacing air to it. Here's the highlight:
