How the My Little Pony Fandom is Different · 5:35pm May 5th, 2014
I've been a part of fandom since I didn't even know what a fandom was, starting with 'Star Trek,' which I think is probably one of the biggest fandoms there is. I'm 31 now, and when I was a teenager, I was into all the big anime fandoms: Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo! Ah...it makes me kind of nostalgic.
Anyway, when I started getting involved in the MLP fandom, especially when I started reading fanfics, I was already forming notions in my head based on the other fandoms I've been a part of, which was a huge mistake! When I was in the Sailor Moon fandom, it was hard to find really good fanfiction. In fact, that's been the same story for most every fandom I've been in, with the exception of Star Trek and Star Wars, which has super-devoted fans, like MLP. When I first started perusing fimfiction, I thought it was going to be hard to find good fanfiction, like it was with my other fandoms. I never could have been more wrong!
The fan videos and music were what got me interested in bronies, and when I saw the documentary, that kind of sealed the deal. MLP is fantastic on its own, but I've been a brony since last October, and anyone who knows me will know that I'm kind of mercurial when it comes to my obsessions. It's not unheard of for me to be into something for a year or more, but as pathetic as it sounds, MLP has pretty much been my life for seven months, lol I've had moments when I wished I could quit my job and do the fandom full-time like some people have been known to. Ponies are quickly taking over my apartment, and fortunately, my girlfriend is a fan too.
But I digress.
As I was saying, when I first came to fimfiction, I expected good fanfics to be few and far between, like they were with my other fandoms. Imagine my surprise when I started reading fics, and finding that the bad ones were more few and far between than the good ones! Of course, now I know what to look for, and the groups on this site really help me find fics I'm interested in so I can separate the wheat from the chaff, as it were, from the get-go, but I've been very pleased and surprised by the wealth of fantastic fanfic on this site, and I've really only scratched the surface!
Now that I've finally started writing my own fanfiction, I can only hope I'm a contributor to all the fabulous fanfic on this site, and I want to thank everyone who's followed me, especially if you took the time to read this long-ass post.
TLDR version:
Other fandoms have a dearth of good-fics, and bronies are as dedicated in the arena of fanfics as they are with everything else they do. Bronies rock. /)
