I'm in desperate need of changeling names! · 3:16am May 5th, 2014

Edit: I've got my names now, no more suggestions needed!
I need names for the Queen's precious little changelings!
(For a sad, dark fic I'm working on. Seriously, this thing is making me cry, and I've barely got it even started.)

But, I need brilliant, original names for at least 3 changeling drones.

Challenge: I've already named one: Drizzt (and yes, that's a reference).
I'd like to keep the rest of the names along the same lines... but I'm just... drawing a blank.
Yes, they have names. They need names to make it more personal when they die.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I'd even be happy to include the name of a changeling OC, if it fits my naming scheme.

Well, if you're going to crush their little bodies for the feels, they need to have cheerful little names like Unlimited Potential, and Bright Future... (I'm partial to Peep Sprout)

Hm.. How about.... Sickle aaaand/or Blight? I dunno.

Here's a couple of ideas. Hope it helps. :scootangel:

Mirror, Shimmer, Swift, Lovestruck, Cupid, Firefly, Switch, Emerald, Ruby, Topas, Blacky, Black heart, Rouse, Shift, Leech, Slipknot, Stinger, Honeybee, Honeytrap, Honeypot, Necter, Ironside, 7th, Carapice, Lovebug, Lust, Lantern, Vivillon, Meta, Coon, Pod, Sneak, Deceit.

Off the top of my head, pretty sure half of them are made with sounds that humans and pony's can't make, but that is the point. I gave them last names, witch could represent birth groups or if that doesn't work in this story they can be used as more names.

I think most of these are unique enough to make readers make separate connections.
-Krizzel Stiz
-Joikk Olq
-Mepestii Uvizto
-Lun'buzzik Duris
-Fliqer Hott
-Quorth Alkkno
-Xeminiq Rstupl
-Trattker Femisk
-Oi'kirr Aam
-Mmenissto Gruzt
-Vivitt Lop
-Lithhul Nuvit
-Rssupal Dagtiz
-Eeski Cvaki

Oh my that was fun, just happened to be thinking about changeling names for a story idea when I notice this.

Not exactly an expert on changelings nor do I have a huge interest in the subject but I do have a Dungeons & Dragons Dark Suns Campaign Setting with a few suggestions for Thri-Kreen names a Thri-Kreen is a bug person as shown in pic below. They have the right feel as far as I am concerned and it's almost funny how well the general characteristics match up.

cdn.obsidianportal.com/assets/58791/Thri-kreen_archer.jpg

Thri-Kreen Characteristics: Distinctive, dutiful, inscrutable, observant, predatory, single-minded, tough
Male and Female Names: Cha’ka, Chuka-tet, Drik-chkit, Hakka, Ka’cha, Kacht ta, Ka’tho, Lakta-cho, Pak’cha, Pik-ik-cha, Sa’Relka, T’Chai, Tak-tha

Of course they don't exactly match up with the English naming theme of the show but you could always say that they have their own language to begin with. Obviously ten minutes with Google can get you tons more Thri-Kreen names if you want and feel free to ask me anything about their lore if you happened to be curious about D&D's version of bug people.

That's all I got!

Cheers, Null

Vespil [A name I actually used once]
Scelios
Mymar
Euloph
Sphecis

All of the above are derived from scientific family names of wasp types (with some creative liberties to make them more name-like). They sound a bit alien, though.

You guys are awesome! :rainbowkiss:
That'll do it! That'll do it very nicely.

2078286
Oh yes. There will be much :fluttercry: in this story.

2078293
Hm... nah. Those just won't work. Who would name a changeling drone something like that?

2078306
Sickle could be usable...

2078313
Aye, that helps.

2078317
:raritystarry:
Now this is a wealth of good names!
I hope that by posting them here, you're happy to share them... because... wow. I could probably just use only these and do great.
You and I seem to have very similar notions of good changeling names!

2078342
Ooh, nice. That'll do very well also... with a little shortening and fewer apostrophes, some of those names could do very well. ^.^ And now I have a reference for looking up more!

2078357
Hm... a bit too much of soft consonant sounds in those... but maybe they'll be useful with a little changing.

I'll post a great list of OC names from my favorite author! :pinkiehappy:

Sun Kisser
Night Game
Visa Champion
Sunset Standing
Jason Sword
Bloody Heart
Sack Warrior
Jesus Christ
Queen Phillip

Give all credit of incredible OC names to BlackAlizebra.

2078372
Yep, no problem, wouldn't have posted them otherwise, probably could come up with a few dozen more easily as each of those was just me typing 2 random letters into the keyboard and thinking about how I could turn that into a usable name.

2078377
:rainbowhuh:
Nice names and all... but for changelings?

Also, 'Jesus Christ' as an OC name. :rainbowlaugh:

Did you know, I named my girlfriend's cat 'Jesus'?
Makes for all kinds of fun conversation.
"Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus?" "Yeah, but sometimes he bites my hand when I rub his belly."
"I hope Jesus comes back soon. ... I let him outside hours ago."

2078372 Oh, drones? Then you always have Disposable, Temporary, Frail, Fragile, Terminal, and Expired.

2078385
You, sir are a gentleman and a scholar... and far better at this 'name the drone' game than I am! :twilightblush:

I hope I'll put these names to good use. :rainbowkiss:

2078395
:rainbowlaugh:
Well, that would describe their state in my story, but it just won't tear people up the same to hear that 'Temporary' died. :facehoof:

2078388
Sure! Why not for changelings? Visa Champion is best OC name. Sack Warrior is also a favorite of mine. :rainbowwild:

I wish I would've seen this earlier... I probably could've came up with a few good ones, but it seems as if you've got plenty enough to decide from already. So I'll let you have at it!

2078414
:facehoof:
:rainbowlaugh:

2078415
Yep, I should get back to writing it.

Hm... writing a sad, dark changeling story with the lights off and the sounds of a mountain thunderstorm through my open window in the background.
So awesome. :rainbowkiss:

2078421 Also, since I'm following you and loved that one story... You know, One In A Million. I believe I should ask you. I was thinking of making a story about Scootaloo not entirely sure what it would be about but I've got a few ideas. So I was thinking. What do you think? I'm not sure I'd post much stories, if I was to get into the whole story writing business, about anypony else but Scoots though... Maybe a few... I've already got a few ideas...

2078413 Well, I really like Pratchett's "The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents" (if you haven't read it, go read it NOW. It's that good) and the naming scheme he has for the rats. Delicious, Dangerous Beans, Nourishing, etc... (They took their names from the tins in the dump where they became intelligent)

2078421 so it literally is a Dark and Stormy Night, eh?

Drizzt?!?! O.0 you have plenty of names but maybe

Catti-Brie
Wulfgar
Regis
Bregner? (I don't remember how to spell it)

XD no but seriously love those books so I had to comment on that

"Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus?" "Yeah, but sometimes he bites my hand when I rub his belly."

"I hope Jesus comes back soon. ... I let him outside hours ago."

:rainbowlaugh::rainbowlaugh::rainbowlaugh:

Alas, my thunderstorm is over... perhaps I'll call it a night after doing the outline and a couple thousand words. More progress tomorrow.

2078454

XD no but seriously love those books so I had to comment on that

You're not the only one who enjoyed those books.
:raritywink:
Hence the reference.

2078439

so it literally is a Dark and Stormy Night, eh?

Oh yes. It's a beautiful atmosphere for writing! Especially for writing dark and sad. :rainbowkiss:

2078437
Sure, go for it.
And PM me if you want help. I always try to help newer authors along.

2078504
I know, right? :trollestia:

2078506 :raritywink::derpytongue2: My cats have (Somewhat) boring names, Jack and Bellamy

2078506 I'll think it through more before I decide... But thanks for the advice and whatnot! :pinkiehappy:

2078506 Well, there's always Someling, who is always getting picked for nasty jobs ("We need someling to plunge out the sewer line." "Good, I'll go get him") This also lets you use humor when he dies ("Someling died!" "Really? Who?" "Someling." "You don't know his name?")
And his eggmate, Somelingelse, who never seems to get picked ("We need a changeling to go fight that tiger." "How about Somelingelse?" "Fine, who do you suggest?")
And of course, their lazy friend, Later. ("Who do you want to dig the ditch?" "Later" "Oh, I guess we don't need that ditch dug right now.")

2078532
:rainbowlaugh:

I'll save those for a comedy, perhaps.
But this fic... it's based on this image: fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2013/089/8/5/mlp___the_unsung_end_by_huussii-d5ztcgn.png

It's not a laughing matter. :applejackunsure:

Later on, though, I hope to write a story based on this image:
s29.postimg.org/br7c3qr93/large_2.png
And in that one, yeah, I think some comedic relief would do wonders.

2078544
Oh my, already want to read it so badly, the inspiration is just inspiring.

/me notices smoky hearts trailing off her horn.
/me instantly wallpapers pic
/20% cooler:rainbowdetermined2:

Here are some random names. They are by no means serious:

Crickadoodle Droney
Windowsill
A'pos'tro'phe
Com,ma,spli,ce
Water Soluble
Go Away
Flufflebuggy
Underline the Bold

And maybe a few decent ones:

Texx
Sen'yo
Quarst
Rinstalin
Edwox
Zizzard

Mendax, Latet, and Furtim.

When in doubt, enter random, character-defining attributes into an online translator.

How about Kelskar?
Name sort of randomly came to me when seeing the post.
Maybe I've just been playing too much Skyrim :ajbemused:

Drizzt

Dark Elf Trilogy!!! :pinkiehappy::heart: Your cool points just went through the roof! :yay:

How about...Lotus (Or Locust), Spring Azure, Nymph, Mantis, Swallowtail, Weevil, Underwing, or Clearwing...?

Too many insect references? :unsuresweetie:

If that's not your style, maybe stick to the Salvatore references?

Clacker, Mooshie, Kessel, or Morkai?

Try this
Male: Facade
Female: Masquerade

think of a bug that seems to fit the character you're going for and wiki it to find names of sub-species/scientific names/parts of their anatomy

It would be kind of funny if two of the changelings' names were complicated and then the last one's name if something like BOB, or BILL.

Like in Beverly Hills Chiwawa 3

2078685

A'pos'tro'phe

:rainbowlaugh:
I may have to use this in some comedy-fantasy setting, just to make fun of all the apostrophe'd names that some authors overuse.

2078688
Ooh... now that's a good idea. I'll keep it in mind for when I need exotic-sounding names.

2078989
I can't have all their names be references!

2079115
Those were good books.
I like Salvatore, though he's a bit too prolific for me to have read all his stuff.

2079185
2079217
Already got my names now, sorry.

2079358
Heh, well, it's not like they're going to have well-developed characters, actually. 3 of the 4 are unconscious during the whole story, and the other 1 passes out after saying just one line.
Or maybe not... maybe I should have one of those 3 wake up. Not Buzzit, no... but one of the other two... but I think I'll leave him too shell-shocked to talk. That would be a nice way to set it up.

2079369
So many comedy names here. Too bad I'm not writing a comedy at all. :facehoof:
But I do plan on writing a happy Chrysalis story in the future, though. Maybe I'll use that trick then.
I dunno. I could see comedy-Chryssy naming all her drones like Gru names his minions. 'Dave' and such. I could play that up to fun effect by having a non-changeling character get worked up about remembering their names, expecting something strange and unpronounceable... to get 'Dave, Bill, Carl'. :trollestia:

2079757 Yeah...reading Salvatore is like reading comic books. You sorta' just have to jump in somewhere and try to keep up. :twilightsheepish: Did you like any of the names I thought up? :duck:

2079819
:rainbowlaugh:
It might be fun to do "Kessel"... A Salvatore and a Star Wars reference all in one word.

2079834
media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/a2/3a/5d/a23a5d0a60caa3c0360ecbc610bbf83b.jpg

You would need to incorporate a Tolkien reference too, and you'd have the ultimate set. :rainbowlaugh:

2079757
you don't need a fully fleshed out character. just use a couple bugs that pop into your mind when you think of those changelings or changelings in general

2080031
True. But hey, I've got my names already now.

Ahh, Drizzt. we meet again.

The most known Dark Elf from Forgotten Realms. Last time I saw you was in Baulder's Gate.

2080329
^.^

...and gun-nut that I am... I can't get over how your avatar is using his patched eye to look down the rifle's sights.
Not so good for aiming, that. :trixieshiftright:

2080515 Yeah, that's one of the animation fails for MGS V, it's the same for Peace Walker.

If you don't know already, MGS is Metal Gear Solid.
