Afternoon folks!

A minor update for everyone! Broken -should- be posted later tonight or tomorrow but that's not what this blog post is about!

Despite my best efforts to spend all day every day writing, I find myself spending time doing other things that I imagine other folks might also partake in. I've been playing Warframe a TON lately and have my own little clan for research purposes, and after enjoying a beta weekend I've decided to take a leap and try out Wildstar when it comes out. Anyone else do either of these? I'm almost always up for more company! Feel free to leave a comment if you do. :)

Huh, I'd never really heard much of Warframe before, but it looks pretty awesome!
As for Wildstar, people keep telling me it's great, but I just can't get into an MMO.

And just as I'm about to finish my second read of Stardust from start to finish.

Now I can't decide between waiting till I'm finished to start on Broken or throw continuity to the side and start on it ASAP.

Ah, who am I kidding! I'll probably read Broken once then give it another read after I've finished Stardust again in a few days.

Speaking of Stardust, my second reading lead me to catch so many clever hints of future events. I'm also starting to suspect Zhang's X-ray vision isn't his only ability as he seems to appear behind people without much warning fairly often. Either he's very good at tiptoeing in combat boots or he's performing short-range teleports without realizing it. Perhaps he's the guy in the preview chapter for Mente Materia going Gilgamesh on that group of E.T.'s.

Just my thoughts. Looking forward to what you've got planned!

I play Warframe. Same name as here on Steam and in game. I tend to play in NA West but will hop regions if the ping is OK.

Dude... did I read this right? Does one of my most favorite pony writes is a fellow Tenno? Well, Vey Hek spank me and call me a Zanuka, I did! We gotta go sometimes together and kick some Grineer asses.

Oh yeah, getting really hyped here.

Good to know Broken is coming out soon. I've had a terrible day today and could use the pick-me-up.

Had to put my chihuahua Rita to sleep this morning. Had her for 15 years though this morning her heart murmur turned into full blown heart failure. I was with her as they put her down, weeping like a newborn.

A friend from here actually got me hooked on it. :P

This is actually one of the lessons I learned growing up. If you're a quiet person who goes out of his way to not stand out, you can achieve something close to invisibility or teleportation. I used to take silent pleasure in scaring the crap out of folks because I had virtually zero presence growing up.

Still, good speculation!

2057910

I have that but I just can't find the time to dedicate to it anymore. :(

2058151

I normally play NA east but I can switch since I'm in the middle of the country, but speaking of Ping I really need to switch ISPs. I swear Centurylink is throttling me.

My favorite is a bit situational but Ash is always a good choice for me. Stealth, mobility and insane amounts of melee DPS are something I'm very familiar with. Been a rogue/stealth/melee DPS character in virtually every game I've played.

My tag in Warframe is Aradamis, feel free to add me. :) (same goes for anyone else who plays!)

Warframe's free. :P A bit grindy but the grind is more fun than other games. Until you start getting Prime blueprints. Orokin Cells are worth their weight in gold.

I can really sympathize. The year before I started Stardust my family had to put my sister's cat to sleep because some sociopath in the neighborhood poisoned it. The year before that we had to put to sleep the family cat we had for fifteen years. I can truly sympathize.

That being said, Broken will probably beat you down before it lifts you up. I'll be posting a rather large-ish comment afterward explaining a lot about my personal feelings on the matter.

Tried War Thunder. My one bright memory was pissing off a guy when I rammed his gigantic seaplane with my itty bitty Spitfire and took him down.

So I'm NOT the only one here who has been playing Warframe a ton instead of being productive.

Anyway, looking forward to Broken!

I'm not much of a PC Gamer

I've heard good things about Warframe, but I've never tried it. Have you tried Xenonauts? I've been hooked on that pretty hard for a few weeks now. It's a fan-funded remake of the original X-COM (from 1994) made by a company called Goldhawk Interactive. It's really good, and I figure you'd probably be interested, since, y'know, XCOM.

Orokin Cells are worth their weight in gold

Pssh no, they're easy to get...
Wait, wouldn't it be "in Plat?" :raritywink:

I've got a clan in Warframe, just a small group of IRL friends. I love it, although I haven't had a ton of time for it lately. Name's Arcchean.

Dirty casuals? ITT?
It's more likely than you think.

I never did get into warframe. I spent pretty much an entire day playing it and it never occurred to me to play it again. Should play World of Tanks instead man. Then again, since I actually like your writing, I probably shouldn't try to foist my addictions onto you, that may be counter productive...

How does it compare to the origional X-Com? I know the fancy looking remake is god awful in comparison (in all fairness, the game isn't bad. It's just absolutely awful compared to the original.), but the original is pretty damn tough to match.

2059784 I haven't played much of the original, but from what I know Goldhawk did a damn good job of it. If you go to their kickstarter page for it, I believe they have a demo you can download, although be warned it's several versions old; I think the demo is an alpha release, and they're in the very late betas now.

I'm pretty damn hard to please when it comes to remakes or sequels (absolutely despised Fallout 3 as a 90's Fallout fan), and I still play the everliving shit out of the old XCOM, but I think the new XCOM is a worthy sequel. Sure, it's truncated to the point where it just barely constitutes an XCOM game (I still miss advanced craft management, multiple bases with different purposes, loadout management, plentiful and gradually improving skills and actual time units), but you get lots of things in return that were simply unthinkable in the original game, things that add depth to the story and make it much more personal. All in all, it's an XCOM experience in a modern packaging. Less complex, but the essence is there. Got pretty much the same vibes from Deus Ex: HR. Not the same as the original, but it plays and most importantly, feels like a Deus Ex.

In This Thread.

You seem to be a Vault Tec logo missing two lines.

Eh, I really didn't get much of any X-Com feel from the remake. The class system was just a cleverly designed method to give you less. Interception just made me quirk an eyebrow. Seriously, the original had better interception graphics in my opinion. Irrationally, I was upset at the loss of the ultra-awesome explosion graphic from the original, but I try to not hold that against the game. You need to pay for upgrades to send more than 4 people into battle is ridiculous, it's not X-Com if you aren't buying soldiers in bulk because they keep dying in bulk (well, until later at least). You deploy a single fire team to fight off an alien invasion. It's no longer squad based action. That's not even half a squad!

The remake essentially gutted the game mechanics, reduced it's depth to a parking lot puddle, and added a story line. You can literally shoot through walls because your projectiles are no longer objects. They'll just fly through objects if RNG says you hit regardless of what is in the way. In the original, you shot through walls by blowing out the wall. There isn't really a nice way to this, but the remake is like a children's version. It's like reading the Hobbit, then instead of reading the LotR trilogy, you get Go Dog Go as a sequel.

As I said, the remake isn't terrible, it's just terrible in comparison. Except the storyline, the original was better in every single way. Especially graphics. Mmm...sweet sweet explosion graphics.

Yeah, it *is* a bit sad that a game from 1993 has better ballistics and a more interactive world with better AoE and explosions, yeah, the class system is a pile of arbitrary bullshit, yeah, interceptions and craft management in general are a joke now, but I insist that the core remained the same. What probably pissed me the most was the nerfed combat system. Enemies only come in fixed size teams that randomly teleport through the map and are inactive until agitated. Two time units. The cover system. Nerfed inventory. All of these pretty much force you to adopt one of the few "winning" tactics, and while the original XCOM had sometimes retarded AI that would have the last alien from a battleship "patrolling" a barn in a dark corner of the map (don't talk about TFTD cruiser terror missions... don't... so many nooks and crannies... so many...), here they pretty much have no AI until you discover them, and even then the actual fight has a very limited scope. Fix all of this and you know what, to hell with good interception or multiple bases. As for the fact you're no longer sending a platoon of guys and half a dozen plasma hovertanks from four bases to kick alien ass in five spots on the globe at once... eh, both are just drops in the ocean compared to the amount of resources the aliens have, and in both instances they don't have a straight-out invasion in mind, which is the only reason XCOM can operate with any degree of success without being completely annihilated in a month.
