My introduction to FIMFiction. · 2:21am May 23rd, 2012
This was originally a post on my Tumblr and I figured it'd be a good place to start for blogs on here as well. Now I can finally separate my real life stuff from MLP stuff. Although, I'll probably just copy paste MLP blogs on both sites. I'm not ashamed of me. :)
It’s been a weird couple of days for me. I don’t feel sick but I don’t exactly feel healthy. I’ve been watching My Little Pony in an attempt to feel better and even reading fan fiction. The fan fictions are getting to me too. I don’t know what it is but most Friendship is Magic (FiM) fanfics are extremely well written. They portray the characters well, and I just can’t help but want to see the stories as a part of the show. And while I believe Hasbro has embraced the brony community, they’re not quite that desperate for storylines just yet. I even found my way into the more *adult* side of FiM.
I found myself reading through fan fictions. Glancing at titles but overall just diving in because I was excited at the prospect of more stories about my favorite show, for the moment and I found myself reading an erotic short story. Now, for a little context here, I’m a 24 year old straight man. I’ve had sex. I’ve watched porn. I’ve read erotic novels. Nothing too out of the ordinary. I generally find porn a little off putting, though. I don’t know what it is but something about sex on camera and the “actors” performing for the “audience” just makes it seem a little creepy. Erotic novels, however, I do not have that problem with. (I reread this and my head called this the “classy” side to porn. Made me chuckle at myself.) My imagination is all I need. I know the story is the author, essentially, “performing” for the reading audience but when you don’t have to see that person it’s different.
So I find myself reading this FiM story when it takes that erotic turn. I’m not immediately put off. Cartoon characters in those situations can get a little weird and cause them to seem out of character, and just not right, which is a problem any author faces at times. The thing that kept me reading, however, was how well the different authors handled these challenges and kept the characters true to their personalities. In the end, cartoon ponies or not, it’s like reading an erotic lesbian story. People don’t know horse parts so they substitute what they know, which is people. I’m fairly certain there’s a bit of an anatomical difference but what do I know. My point being I’ve never found a community of fan fiction writers that handle both the mundane, regular stories, and the erotic stories, so well. It’s refreshing to sometimes see new writers handle certain challenges like true professionals.
Now, I’m sure that won’t come off as relaxed and cavalier as I mean it to and I’ll sound like some giant pervert, but whatever. I think it’s the little things that make your life great, and, for me, good writing is a small part that people that for granted.
Also, I need orange juice and have none. Sick people woes.
