Okay, I've been reading and I found an interesting couple of sentences in a certain story.
"I put a band aid over the hole. And took some aspirin.
Now you might be thinking to yourself, "Eps, what the fuck are you talking about? Those sentences are total shit! The second one isn't even complete." Well, you're right, these sentences are total shit, but once you see the context these sentences were in you will understand why I find these to be one of the greatest differences between English and fiction writing.
But first, let me tell you just who wrote these pretties.
If you guessed me, you're wrong. These bad boys were written by someone more influential than the great Pen Stroke. These sentences were written by none other than STEPHEN KING!!!
To the two of you who don't know the godly Stephen King, let me give you a crash course. Imagine Pen Stroke, but with thirty years of experience under his belt and about ten more stories. Then multiply that by twenty!
Now that you know who wrote these sentences, let me tell you why they are so cool.
Yes, under normal circumstances, these would never pass the test, but there is nothing normal about Dialogue
In dialogue, you can get away with so many things, and is where most of the fun of writing comes from.
To me, the difference between a comma and a period is like a short pause and a long one, not the beginning and end of a sentence.
The point I am trying to get across is that you don't always have to abide by the rules when it comes to writing, but you do have to learn the rules before breaking them. If you don't then it would be like trying to break a nonexistent stick. You will never hear the snap and wont know if you are doing good or messing with stuff you don't understand.
Thank you to those who read this far, I know I talk alot, and I am very thankful. I will try to make a post like this whenever I find cool little things, but if anyone can find a better name than "Eps" I'd be very thankful. "Eps" just sounds stupid.
Okay, update time. I will not be able to get the next review out on time due to school and other responsibilities, but I will shoot for monday.
And as you might have seen, the next chapter of "Strange Discovery" is ready for prereaders. Anyone who can help please PM me. I don't bite, and opinions on my work are always appreciated.
Thank you
Never read Duma Key, but Bag of Bones is an amazing read. Stephen King really is the king of horror fiction (even though that novel isn't really a horror.)
How did you know it was from Duma Key?
