Princess Trinity Chapter 2 Is Up · 12:39am May 20th, 2012

It's taken a little time as real life has kept me busy, but "Princess Trinity" has a new chapter, "Chapter 2: Three Princesses."

In this chapter, we get Queen Chrysalis being gross, Inkie being depressed, Tirek being a scenery-chewing stock villain, Cadence being cutesy, Celestia being Celestia, and Luna being . . . well, Luna, I hope. Princess Luna is my favorite pony, which might explain why I have a hard time writing her.

I'll finally see about writing a review in the zany style I usually prefer (being rather agreeable).

DGD, from what you've told me, I'm not surprised you have a hard time writing Luna, given how the writers developed her character in season 2 (a clueless, absentee princess obsessed with her public image and not averse to stooping to the level of a carnival attraction to win over the common ponies). Paraphrasing Gandalf from Lord of the Rings, for you, the Luna of SDL, TWAP, and PT is Luna, or rather Luna as she should have been.

P.S. I do think she has a bit of a temper, but like much else in FiM it's inconsistent, she gets mad when nopony shakes her hoof or when accused of gobbling backsides, but not when some brat grabs her mane.

The Luna I wrote in "Shadow of the Dragon Lords" and "To Woo a Princess" is different from this one, though. I'm trying to make her less arrogant and overbearing than in my other interpretations. A pre-reader gave me a justifiable smackdown for the Luna of "To Woo a Princess": she just wasn't canon.

But, yes, I see Luna as the fearsome and haughty practitioner of black magic, so when I try to write her like she actually is in the show, I find I just don't know what words to put in her mouth or what actions to give her.

I think accusing her of gobbling backsides is a worse offense than tugging her mane, though.

Of course, another way to bring Princess Luna more in line with her canon portrayal, besides the attitude adjustment (shades of Twilight's advice here), requires changing Luna's level of involvement in the story. For example, the moment the demons of Tarturus spill out into Equestria, the canon Luna would disappear into some undisclosed location, let her co-princesses and the mane six do all the work, then reappear at the end just in time to show off her dance moves...
