So, the trailer that launched a single ship is here. Actually, it's been here for a while, but for an insight into how my mind works, check this thing out.
Yup, Ace Combat Infinity. When that trailer came out, I just about went nuts. See, at 1:57, a pilot goes "large presence detected at high altitude!" followed by "here comes the main attack!" For me, that was one of those spine-tingling moments. It's worth pointing out that if I hadn't heard those lines, it's possible that the Sol or its deadly ADS weapon would never have featured in my latest story, Spark. After seeing that trailer, though, I began to consider throwing in a "big baddie" of sorts for the Aviators to deal with. The Sol was actually in development for almost three months before it featured in my story, and it underwent several massive changes for the final product (would I have liked to keep the repeating crossbows on deck? Yes. Would they have made any sense on a ship built primarily for the transportation of the wealthy? Eh.)
So that's my random tangent for the day. On a related note, this game looks incredibly awesome (with the exception of the completely ridiculous "sortie fuel system.") I had the opportunity to play the beta during the brief period it was out, and I gotta say-
Damn, Project Aces, you outdid yourselves.
I tended to play singleplayer on this thing like Nimbus, forcing myself to use guns rather than missiles, and one thing I'll point out right now is that gun kills are so much more satisfying than they used to be. There's a fine balance in this game between ranged and close range combat. The older, original titles got long range dogfighting right, and despite its flaws, Assault Horizon added the cinematic chaos of a close-range dogfight. Infinity feels like a fine balance between the two. Multiplayer's pretty awesome too, though missiles take priority, with guns being used to quickly down an enemy with high health or while missiles recharge. As for the story? I believe we can expect some quality tales a la Ace Combat 4, if all goes right. All in all, save for the fuel sortie system, I think we have a good game on the horizon.
And I just realized I went from talking about ponies to airplanes. Quite the topic change, but all in all, not a bad waste of ten minutes. See ya!
