Not really gonna discuss much of it, except that I quite liked it.
Not an amazing, earth shattering episode, but... it was very, very solid. Humor, characterization, pacing, etc etc. All worked out great.

I was about to write this episode off as the worst the season had produced by about halfway through. Then, outta freakin' nowhere, it suddenly picked up and was back on form. My main (and pretty much only gripe, really), is AJ felt so OoC throughout the first half of the episode. Never in the history of the show, has she ever acted so... smother-y.
Action AJ, now with flame-proof boots and all new jump action, however, did provide some entertaining watching.
1910340 She felt totally in character, actually. Just felt like she was going too far - huge case of helicopter mom. Made perhaps a bit worse by cartoon gags, but... no, this is basically a lesson zero type moment for her without going actually insane.

I saw it as sudden anxiety because this was the first time she wasn't going to be a quick run away from 'Bloom if "Bloom got hurt or in trouble.
1910916 1911226 I dunno... It just didn't seem to fit her character, to me. Yeah, she's rivalled only in caring by Fluttershy, but this was just way OTT for her. Meh, maybe I'm just not as in tune with her character as I thought.

Ah, but you just pointed out something different. Over the top does not equal out of character. She was over the top here. Overbearing, doing too much. She just didn't realize how much it smothered Apple Bloom, until the end. But it remained in character for her... just turned up to 11.

On another note, that place was pretty freakin' awesome. As I keep telling my friends, especially after the Tazlwurm, Equestria really needs a Hunter's Guild branch from Monster Hunter, maybe with a bit less slaying, though.
