In which I talk about some history, and a special announcement. · 10:55pm Jan 14th, 2014

Who wants some more headcanon?

...

Well too bad, you're getting it anyway.
This is largely inspired by, of all things, character creation for a pony based D&D game. While working on my characters backstory, I also ended up developing the history for his hometown. Which led to developing a headcanon for the early days of Equestria's founding, especially for earth ponies. I have a lot of time for thinking at my job. :twilightsheepish:
So, let's get the ball rolling.

(Boy I hope this actually fits.)
Part One: The founding.
So, starting with the original founding of Equestria by the three tribes. Assuming that the Hearth's Warming story is a highly abridged version of events, I figure it may have actually been a few years after each tribe made their way to Equestria before they encountered each other again. Long enough for them to establish themselves. The pegasi settled north of the Unicorn Range Mountains, founding the country Pegasopolis, which would eventually become the city of Cloudsdale. Due to the nature of a cloud city, there is literally nothing of the current pegasus city that resembles the original settlement, the only images of it that still exist were made by ground based artisans after the unification. According to these old images, it was much darker and imposing looking back in the day, reflecting the pegasi's martial nature.
The Unicorns, being a bit more paranoid than the others, and fearing potential depredations by the pegasi, who they assumed would follow them, settled in the central portion of Equestria, in the middle of a large forest. The location was chosen because forests form a natural obstacle to flying warriors, and the castle was built near a large ravine, functioning as an additional natural defense. Not long after the keep was finished, the unicorns began bringing in their refugees, and a small town sprung up around the castle. Princess Platinum's father, pleased that the unicorns were now free from the ignominy of requiring pegasus help with the weather, named the location Everfree. Course, as the King was notable for being even more of a unicorn supremacist and believer in the nobility's inherent superiority over the peasants than his daughter; who at least viewed Clover the Clever as a friend and confidant, even if she saw her as being her inferior, this name was seen as being a bit ironic by the peasants.
Lastly, the earth ponies had taken the sea route, and sailed up the east coast, landing in what would become known as Horseshoe Bay. Deeming that area too rocky to settle, they moved northward, until they reached a place notable for having wide open spaces, nearby forests, and was generally fertile. After Smart Cookie managed to convince Puddinghead that "Earth" was a really dumb name for the settlement, they settled on the name Fillydelphia for the new town. Bringing in the earth pony refugees caused a rather massive population explosion, and in the course of a year Fillydelphia grew to stupendous size fairly quickly, and it soon became apparent that even with the large swaths of farmland they could not support their population in one location. Unwilling to go back to small villages that would be easy to prey on by other tribes, Puddinghead (whose policies are largely attributed to Smart Cookie) decided to instead found two more large cities, one north and one south. The southern town, Baltimare, was founded first, growing from the natural harbor that Horseshoe bay provided. The second was Manehattan, founded to the north in the large pine forests near the Crystal Mountains. The access to both large amounts of wood and stone allowed Manehattan to quickly become a manufacturing center, and a lot of earth pony industry moved north.
Eventually of course, the three tribes found each other again, largely because the pegasi and unicorns were looking for the earth ponies because they didn't know how to grow their own food. When they found them however, they discovered 3 large walled cities with strong militia's that were not particularly interested in working for them again. Seeing the two other tribes coming, Smart Cookie moved most of the food stores and militia to Fillydelphia, hoping that it would make the other two cities less of a target, and allowing them to protect their food. It worked, as neither Manehattan or Baltimare had sufficient stores between them to suit the pegasi and unicorn's needs. Unfortunately, both tribes were able to keep Fillydelphia from getting food to both cities, resulting in a stalemate. The three leaders then met to negotiate again, and the rest is history.
