Alright. Time to get back to work! · 6:41pm Dec 28th, 2013
Break is officially over. You guys feel free to send me stuff again if you want.
Since it would be stupid to make a blog post that short, how about I list of my top 5 fictional characters as well? You don't have to answer, I'm doing it anyway. Here we go, in order, descending from 5 to 1.
This blog post contains massive spoilers for the stories in which these characters are in.
5: Scarlet Rabbit.
From the fanfic: Upheaval: Breaking Point. Link is an audio reading because Forest Rain's narration is what really made me appreciate this character.
Scarlet Rabbit is one of those characters who seems alright to begin with, where you just have this inkling that she is going to turn bad. She's a fast flyer, and serves the legion in a crossbow wielding, Pegasus battalion. She has a very rough and tumble personality and takes an instant liking to Rainbow Dash when she joins the same battalion, taking her under her wing and teaching her how to survive the battles against the legions enemies.
Scarlet ends up serving as a great example for how war in the northern Barrierlands can corrupt a pony. She feels really deep and well fleshed out, and has amazing character development throughout the story, despite being somewhat of a side character. Basically, the story wouldn't be the same without her.
4: Sen Mithrarin
From: Dust: an Elysian Tail
Or just dust, I guess. It was really hard to pick between Dust and Fidget, but in the end, my semi-dormant furriness had to give way to the awesome character that is dust. If you haven't played this game, and think that you might some day, you should probably stop reading this right now and just skip on to the next one.
Dust has a really interesting back story. At some point before he came to exist, a mad kings legion attacked a peaceful village in some mountains. In the legion, was a deadly assassin named Cassius, filled with malicious spirit, and trained to kill with great efficiency. In the village, was young boy named Jin. Not a whole lot is told about Jin, except that he is one of the side characters' sister, and that he was a really nice dude who normally wouldn't hurt a fly.
Cassius and the kings men attack the village, and kill almost everybody, including Jin's family. Jin is so pissed off, that he moves to confront Cassius, and try to kill him. Despite his inexperience, Jin manages to fell Cassius, but dies in the process. A few ancient rituals and some lizard-man magic later, Dust(also known as Sen Mithrarin) is born. He has the skill of Cassius, and Jin's gentle personality. Dust goes on to conquer the dueling spirits in his mind and save some lizard dudes from the evil king who ordered the attack on the village that Jin lived in before he died.
So that is why Dust is a cool character. So cool, in fact, that I think I might have shed a tear when the game was over. His character really did touch me.
3: Anonymous Murakami Character.
From: 'A wild Sheep chase', 'Dance, Dance, Dance', and a couple of other stories.
Okay, so here is the deal. There is this Japanese author named Murakami(pic), who writes one of the meanest, most awesome characters ever. The only problem with putting that character on this list, is that he doesn't have a name, or indeed, much of a description at all. Like, we, as a reader, are just never informed what he looks like, or what his name is. We just know that he is the main character.
Murakami uses this weird, nameless character in almost every single one of his stories. He doesn't state that it is the same guy, but if you read between the lines you can tell that it is.
The stories that this guy appears in are all written in first person and are seen from this mystery character's perspective. The character never mentions his name, and no one ever seems to address him by it either. He describes himself as having an average appearance, and a lower than average height. That is really all of the description we get.
The reason I like this character is that he is so overall normal and average, that he starts feeling a bit surreal. He edits articles for magazines, working on demand, and otherwise doesn't do much of anything. He enjoys 80's and 90's rock music and drinking. He easy to relate to, and extraordinarily well written for a character that doesn't have any major defining traits. Somehow, even though he is the most ordinary fuck imaginable, he ends up bedding half a dozen women, and getting involved in several supernatural occurrences. He often offers strange remarks, and zen-like reflection, when confronted with these supernatural situations
2: Sweetie Belle
You guys already know who this is, so I'll skip the intro. I like sweetie Belle because of her voice acting(mostly referring to her adorable voice cracks here). I like Sweetie Belle because she is a bit of a blank character, with no obvious motivations. I like sweetie belle because she makes for awesome fanfics.
1: George Milton
From the book: Of Mice and Men
Yeah, this is my number one. John Steinbeck writes this character so amazingly well, it just amazes me. No summary here, no sir. This plot-line is waaay to good to ruin. Suffice to say, that George learns about the "magic of friendship" in one of the most tragic and beautiful ways imaginable, and that it really touched my heart(I bawled my eyes out), both when I read the book, and when I watched the movie.
I think that is it. These are all of my favorite characters. There really aren't any mor-
...
Hold on a second. There is actually one more.
Bonus: Danny's father: William.
From: Danny, the Champion of the World.
Danny and his father live in a rundown trailer somewhere in England or the United States. I could never quite figure out which myself. They are very poor, but despite their economic state, and Danny's deceased mother, William always manages to be one of the most fluffy fathers you could imagine. He makes kites for his son, makes him midnight snacks when he can't sleep, builds him a wooden racing car that he can play with, and teaches him how to poach pheasants (you'll have to read the book to understand that last one). Basically, he is the coolest father ever, and one of the best children's book characters ever.
If you're wondering what he looks like, you can take a look at my profile picture. It's an illustration done for the book.
Ps: Sorry for all of this rambling. This came out a little longer than I expected it to.
I have never understood the fuss about Steinbeck, myself. His stories honestly bore me. To each their own, I suppose.
