    A chapter in two parts

With the end of the month now here, I wanted to give another update on the status of the chapter. Work has been slow yet steady, its starting to really come together now, but as I feared its gonna be a very long one. For this reason, I have made the decision the chapter will be split into two parts. This is so it will be easier for everyone to read and you wont be forced to read a 10k chapter in

I can't write Sherlock Holmes, and Zecora fics · 8:18pm Dec 14th, 2013

I can’t write Sherlock

I just can’t simply do it. There is something beyond infuriating about it, but for the life of me, I can’t write the character. I’m not just talking about one of them; I’m talking all of them.

Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes

Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes

Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes

Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlock Holmes

None of them. For the life of me, and I’m not sure if it’s some bizarre mental block, but I cannot write Sherlock Holmes. He seems to always verge out of character, and the dialogue just never feels right. It’s practically unfortunate as I love nearly every rendition of the character. I’ve read all the original stories, seen every Jeremy Brett and Cumberbatch episode and watched both Robert Downey Jr. films. Despite my familiarity with the character, I’m never able to get it right and this has become rather frustrating.

When I planned on rewriting “The Bat, The Doctor, The Rainbow and Mr Carnage,” Sherlock Holmes was originally going to be in Naoto’s place. but in the end I just can’t write him. If I’m going to do this, I’m going to use a character I can write. Naoto is one of them.

So do any of you have any advice on writing Sherlock Holmes, preferably the Benedict Cumberbatch one? If you can though, some advice on all of them please. It is rather frustrating.

On other news, I am overjoyed to see a Zecora central story make it to the feature box. I love Zecora, she is on my top 5 favourite mlp characters and it’s a shame she’s so difficult to write. That damn rhyming. She’s a very unique character in the world, and I really wish I could improve in rhyming so I can put her in more stories.
Do you guys know any good Zecora stories? Seriously, I’d love to read some. My favourite is a Crowley fic about her. “The Poison of Passion.” That’s it for today, have a good evening folks.

I'm not sure of any Zecora focused stories, but that picture of her is adorable.

If you like Zecora so much, I would not recommend you read my story unless you'd enjoy seeing her impaled.:pinkiecrazy:

1606537 Your comment made me sad. Why Zecora!?!? :raritydespair:

1606543 Because she is part of the rebel alliance and a traitor! Take her away! :moustache:

Please don't tag blog entries to an unrelated story; this post has nothing to do with Dating a Changeling. I get far too many blog alerts as it is, so if you keep on posting unrelated blogs I might have to unfavourite the story to keep them from appearing, and I don't want to do that.

1606663 Just ignore the blog. I did it because I wanted some advice and since so many people have favourited that story, it increases my chances.

1606668 It doesn't have to do with ignoring the blog, it's that I get so many blog alerts already that it clutters up the list. I've previously missed a couple blogs that I wanted to read because there was so much other stuff in the stream that they got lost, and I want to avoid that.

1606686 How do you know if you wanted to read these blogs, if you haven't read them?:rainbowderp:

1606695 Because they're by authors that I properly follow, rather than just tagged-story blogs.

1606700 Ouch, well excuse me.

I'll just stop doing blogs all together so your less annoyed.

1606729 Yeah, saw that, very nice :raritywink:

1606700 Since you were interested on a HTTYFYDAC update, the next chapter is making great progress. I'd say about 75% done.

My I humbly suggest the amazing Holmes group? It's not only rife with excellent ponified Holmes but also a plethora of friendly folks who I'm sure could help you figure out the enigmatic hero.

1606709 ...All I asked was for you to tag your blog posts only if they related to the story. Which is what you're supposed to do anyway. Nothing more. :applejackunsure:

1606801 Great!

Oh, that damned rhyming... yes, I can write her, but I hate doing it. Though, that's never a reason for me to keep her out of a story, mind you. If I think she needs some page-time in one of my stories, then I'll do it. But uh, yea, I don't think I'll ever write a Zecora-centric story.

1607367 Thank you, I had a look and it gave me some ideas

1607509 I'll try and do that from now on.

1608257 Shame, I'm considering braving one myself

1609475 May the force be with you.

1611325 Yes, I would like inspiration, I think

Hmm, I think the hardest part of writing Sherlock would be adapting your mentality to his level. That intrinsic feeling of "why are they all so tiny? Why can't they just think?" while at the same time dealing with the nagging feeling that they've got something that he doesn't. They aren't bored. They derive fun from their tiny little lives with their pointless thoughts.
He's trying to get that enjoyment, but only when something has a big enough risk, a big enough puzzle, enough variables that he has to work at it to pull it all together, does it even begin to scratch the itch.
He's a workaholic, and his manic need for overachievement is centered in the art of living.

1619994 Some say it's the curse of being a genius. It's hard to find anyone to relate too.

1620593 It's true, but for Sherlock it's even one step further. He's borderline sociopathic in some cannons, and supposedly (we only have his word for it in the current) fully sociopathic in this one. Not only can he not relate to people on an intellectual level, his social and emotional levels are completely different as well. He genuinely cannot understand why people feel the way they do about things outside of a vague intellectual concept, like reading about emotions in a book and trying to guess at the pieces. It's why he likes "interesting" criminals. There's something broken in them that lets them do the crime in the first place, and that something he can relate to, if only for a moment before stopping them.
As for his relationship with Ms. Hudson and Watson, since he can't form normal relationships, he creates a loophole; claiming ownership. They're his. Every action and reaction goes through a series of weighed pros and cons of any given action around them to keep them safe from harm, useful, and satisfied enough to not leave. Layers of formed reactions to emulate friendship as close as he can. As horrible as that might sound from an average standpoint, they're the only people in the world he claims as his, and in doing so, he can love them.

1620721 You've given me some thing to think about, thank you
