To be an optimal couple, you need to be similar, but you also need differences (Sorry, there goes all the Fluttershy Mac ships) out of the main 6 (excluding AJ) Rainbow is the most different from Macintosh.
For one, Rainbow is very spoken and flash, where as mac is quiet and calm. Rainbow tends to be lazy, and Macintosh never stops working. Rainbow is a Pegasus Mac is an Earth pony . All of these differences quite opposite, and in a relationship there are the things that could rub off on each-other, calming Rainbow down, but also making Macintosh more confident.
Both are loyal,both are trustful, neither will let you down, both love AJ, both work hard(when Rainbow is working), both can work together well (Flim+Flam) and these are the similarities that make a good relationship.
Now, I do think that Rainbow probably developed a crush on Soarin' that's exactly the same as loving your favorite band member right? But as you get older, these crushes can just be simple "childhood" crush, or they can develop. I think if Rainbow was in a relationship (regardless of who's she's with) it would come down to her loyalties, and her dream/expectations of what would come out of this relationship.
At the same time, I think the main 6 would have expectations of ending up with somebody right? Well, like in real life, sometime this just doesn't work out. In life, you might just find that you'd end up with somebody you'd never think you would.
How many times have you seen a beautiful man/woman with somebody as plain as day, and they are so perfect together?(I know I though that when my mum first got with my step-dad, I didn't think it would work, 8 years later they're married with a 7 year old son ^^)
So, I think that given the chance to know each-other more ect, Rainbow and Macintosh would make the perfect couple, they'd change each other in the right way, without changing who they are. I know the reason for Rainbow haters, and I love her to bits, but I think she does need to tone down ... who better than Mac? Other male characters would just make her worse ... and I really don't want that.
Now, I also have other ships I like, AJ and Saorin' are kind of my gender-flipped version of MacinDash, Twilight and Flash, though I really want to see more of his character, because it was kinda pathetic in EQG, and Flutters with Brae-burn.
So what do you think? Whats your favorite ship and why do you think they work so well?
Wow now you put it that way it really changes my views on things i used to like flutter mac because they were so similar but now i think about it it would be quiet a boring relation ship. Thanx for sharing your views on macdash with me it has changed my views a lot :) xxx

This... this is beautiful. I could go into why I think MacDash is the OTP... but I'd just be quoting you.
Other faves are Twilight/Flash, AJ/Caramel, Pinkie/Braeburn. I have no idea who to ship Rarity with, since I like the idea that Fancypants and Fleur are a happily married couple. Honestly, I've always seen Fluttershy as the most likely candidate for being a lesbian, I have NO idea why, just kinda always saw it.
