Short version: A man with a history of being a belligerent and unhinged man, who has been previously relieved of knives and other weapons by police and got deported from Norway for repeated thefts and violent behavior got shot.
At about 1 am last night he started firing at cars in the parking lot outside his apartment building with a shotgun. Police arrived a couple of hours later, and shortly thereafter the whole block was cordoned off and the Viking Unit (Iceland's SWAT team) was swarming all over.
After lobbing several tear gas canisters through the guy's windows and taking a bunch of return fire, they attempted to breach the apartment. The guy shot 2 officers, thankfully both were wearing full body armor and weren't critically injured. The SWAT shot back, and the guy died in the ambulance.
This is literally the first time police in Iceland have ever fired a weapon outside a firing range. The general police force doesn't even carry weapons. The news have barely talked about anything else today. Needless to say I am quite a bit unsettled by this.
