Unicorns as symbols · 2:27pm Nov 15th, 2013

In language arts yesterday my our class was talking about common symbols in English literature because we had just finished reading Beowulf. We got on the topic of Unicorns eventually and I learned something very interesting. If a Unicorn has no collar on it's neck it represents freedom and Majesty and all the things we normally think of when we see a Unicorn. However, if you see a picture of a Unicorn with a collar around it's neck it means depression and slavery. The worst of all that is if you see a wounded Unicorn then that means death.
The Unicorn is a powerful symbol in English literature so I suggest not abusing the amazingly beautiful creature.

I suggest Beowulf for experienced readers. It does have a lot of gore and blood so younger readers might not want to attempt it until they are older. Let me just point out one more interesting fact about the Unicorn. England's royal crest has a Unicorn and a Lion rearing and facing each other on it.

Be careful when using the Unicorn in literature, use the symbol correctly!

Wow...never mentioned how much could be meant by the use of a Unicorn...

Yes I know, it shocked me the first time I heard it too! My language arts teacher is so amazing.
