I Face a Conundrum · 3:01am Oct 2nd, 2013
The next chapter of False Masks sadly is not ready. Thanks to various problems, mainly time constricts, it is not even half done. However, given the nature of this chapter I could easily split it into two smaller chapters, the first of which would be out no later than two weeks from now. It would probably clock in at about four thousand words instead of the usual eight and will end on a minor cliffhanger.
Since you all are the ones doing the waiting it seems fair to let you decide whether to wait for the whole chapter or get the first of two smaller ones. Which would you prefer?
I'd go for the two smaller chapters. There's nothing wrong with getting part of it sooner as opposed to waiting longer for the whole thing.
I'm good to wait, actually. I'd rather see the thing as a whole.
Take as long as you need. If you feel it works as two chapters post that, if it needs to wait a month or two and be a single one do that. As long as your next chapter is out before Skin Game I won't bat an eye.
Whatever is best for the story is what is best for me.
...I generally would vote for the two smaller chapters, but I tend to sit down with False Masks over a nice breakfast on a Saturday or Sunday and just make a pleasant morning of it. So, honestly, I think I'd vote for the one big chapter, whenever you get it ready.
I'd prefer one long chapter. That's always my vote for things, and I'm sticking to it .
I would say to do whatever you feel more comfortable with. If you would rather clean it up and publish it as a whole then by all means do that. If you want some comments to motivate you then go ahead and release half now. We will be happy with whatever you do, and I doubt the cliffhanger will be as big as some of the other ones you have left us with at the ends of real chapters.
Whatever's easiest for you. Writing's hard.
I would rather wait for something finished, myself. It makes revisions easier for you.
I'd go for the longer chapter.
You tread in dangerous places, Scubadude, opening this up for general discussion. But since it is done, my two bits:
A year ago, I would have JUMPED on the split-it-in-two option. With Skin Game looming and friends talking about the little tidbits of information that have been going around, I've been hankering for a Dresden fix. If that weren't bad enough, the new by-skype Dresden RPG I've been setting up (as the GM) has been delayed until I can work out some problems with my ISP. I'm getting the shakes. I'm not gonna lie, I've been checking up on your last upload every week or so trying to guess when the next one might be. Counting the days...
So yes, it has been missed. Sorely. ()
I'm not the same person I was a year ago.
You have a talent, Scubadude. And I don't just mean for ponies or dresden or crossovers. Hell's Bells, you know how to write. You've spent years working on these and developing that talent, and it shows. And I think, most importantly, you've shown a mastery for planning and delivering complex plots, something I find lacking even in some published fiction.
I'm going to take a lesson right out of 'Suited for Success.' I'm going to back off, trust you to your talent, and let you get back to work. You don't need me or anybody telling you what you should do with the next chapters. So take a look at your story, figure out what's best for the narrative, and go for it.
Stop worrying about what we think and get back to it. I'm sure we all appreciate the heads up. Now that we all know it isn't ready yet, we'll find ways to make due.
Thanks again for the stories that opened me up to this fandom.
I'm going to be entirely useless and say to go with what you feel works best for the narrative!
I think.....hmmm.... uhh....
One may think the longer chapter would be better, and have some more detail...
Another may think that the shorter 2 part chapter may have the same amount of detail... But, once you send it off to the masses, there is no going back. Thus, it may allow you to "forget" about the first half, and allow you to concentrate on the second chapter.
There may be a whole lot of better, or more true reasons... But I'm not a writer.
But I cast my vote for 2 chapters.
I would happily wait for the finished product.
Although, in actuality, you're the writer here, so it's your call.
I want to wait for the full chapter.
I would prefer the whole chapter. But do whatever works best for you.
i'm cool with waiting. we already wait a year for each book in the series, am i right?
Waiting is always fun.
I am fine with the waiting for the longer, more complete chapter.
And be sure to take your time with it. No need to rush things and make mistakes. We can wait as long as needed.
Give us 128.785% of the next chapter. To lessen the cliffhanger.
Or, you know, just publish the chapter when you see fit.
In all honesty, you're the one lovingly crafting all these fantastic words for us and I'd have to defer to your wisdom on the matter. One thing I might suggest, though, would be to consider it from another angle. Which way makes the delivery better? If splitting it doesn't really interrupt the flow and you feel it stands fine in that way then by all means. But if you feel that keeping the reader tied into the chapter through the whole thing flows better then maybe that would be the way to take it.
Just the questions I would ask myself in this situation. (Though honestly, you've probably already thought about things like that. Like NotSoSubtle said, you've got huge talent. Whatever you think is best surely will be the best! )
I'm absolutely fine with waiting for the full chapter, but you should take whichever option is easier for you.
I say quality over quantity – I'm willing to wait for the full thing.
I think it's better to wait for the whole thing. This story deserves the patience, and I think you do too.
Considering the quality of this story, I would say to wait. You can't rush perfection, Mr. Butcher.
I say we wait. Good things come to those who wait.
For this patience will be my virtue
I'll wait.
Do whichever will result in a higher quality end product.
I'd rather wait for an excellent chapter, thank you.
My instincts say to wait until it is ready. But as the author you are best able to judge if it is ready or not.
I say we waited this long, as long as it hasn't been dropped I say we can wait longer till the longer chapter is done.
Really, whatever you want. If you want to get something out I will enjoy it. If you wait, so will I.
I'll wait if you want.

Too late, I saw your original comment.
My friend, take as long as you want to what you feel is the correct course of action. I will be happy with whatever you choose, so follow your heart.
