So my writing schedules got a little jumbled because I just got a full-time job. Still adjusting to it and the umpteen music things I have going on at the same time. However, I do have a preview for the next chapter of "The Book of Friendship," one that I think might help to clarify for some of you if the ending of the last chapter was a little unclear.
1359526 Oh, I've read My Immortal. My Immortal is actually funny. It's a trollfic, and a clever one at that. For example, it routinely misspells "Voldemort" by variously spelling it with every letter around the D key, i.e. "Volsemort," "Volxemort," etc.
But there are... other fics. Fics which aren't written for joking purposes. For example, I've been reading the Rose Potter series, which I feel I should post someplace easily accessible by the public, as it is a perfect example of how not to write a story. There's also Lily's Changes, a Peggy Sue fic wherein the first chapters are literally nothing but the author (via using a character as a mouthpiece) bitching about all the characters in the series and how Deathly Hallows sucks and blah blah blah blah blah.
13595521359533 To be honest, I'm not sure if it's a trollfic or not since you can never tell on the Internet. What you can tell though is that it is pretty damn halrious.
I know that *I* can't stand Ron. He's a temperamental loud-mouth who has few to no redeeming qualities who's only in the series because Harry needed a "best friend," and it's obvious that Hermione couldn't be that for him since she's a giiiirl. Though honestly, Hermione really wouldn't be "best friend" material anyway, because Harry really, really needed someone to lighten up his days, given all the crap he goes through, but Ron's a real dick (and not in a good way), so he wasn't a good choice, either.
1360481 I disagree. Ron's in the series to be the down-to-earth type, while Harry is basically an escapist vehicle and Hermione is essentially a child prodigy. Ron also serves the narrative purpose of being one of the main characters who is close to the wizarding world from the get-go, and him being a very average person to ease the reader into the setting helps with the "urban fantasy" angle the story is going for.
And I think people tend to really exaggerate Ron's dickishness (especially if said people shipped Harry/Hermione). He isn't really any more of a dick than Harry is, and when you say "no redeeming qualities," that's kinda leaving out the fact that Ron was someone who was able to overcome his hangups - his inferiority complex, his crippling arachnophobia, his jealousy - and come through for Harry when it really mattered, even saving his life. In my mind, that speaks volumes for his character, from both a literary and moral standpoint.
He's the "Twist" of Harry Potter.
Don't feel too bad. I end up feeling the same way about all the Diamond Tiara and Twist hate too :p
It's even a trope namer! Look up "Ron the Death Eater"
Want to read what is quite possibly the worst Harry Potter fan fiction? Look up My Immortal. Keep the brain bleach close by.
Because he's canonically shipped with Hermihoweveryouspellit and they just can't stand it. Also he's totally not all handsome like Radcliffe is.

Who DOESN'T know about that fic? It's the best trollfic ever made.

Because Ron is a silly person who had the audacity to snog with Potter's true waifu.
Or people are silly.
Because he's a ginger, and everyone knows gingers are... gingers... they're ginger.

The fact that you're entertaining the thought that it might not be a trollfic just proves how effective it is. ;)
