This has been put off far too long—nothing else to say there.
As I look back on blog posts made six months ago, I can't help but gawk at how bad they all are. It's something I hope to rectify. I'm not sure the direction of this blog post, nor am I sure if I will once again be updating with frequency, but never let it be said that I have given up on my goal to write something.
Firstly, my original goals were far too ambitious. Serves me right.
Secondly, I have taken a keen interest in crossovers. Maybe.
Thirdly, as though there was actually a thirdly, this is a third thing.
I enjoy rumination, deliberation, contemplation, etcetera. Magic is something that I find particularly intriguing. As such, instead of writing 15,000 words of incoherent garbage, I will just write a small collection of basic rules as to how magic works as far as I am concerned.
1. Magical auras are invisible to the untrained viewer. If a unicorn were to levitate something, it would appear to be floating for no realistic reason.
2. Magical auras, when made manifest through various means, have a color tailored to the caster's cutie mark's primary color.
3. Magical capacity has two basic rules: You can't use more magic than you can 'store' at one time, and you can't use more magic than is present in nature around you. What this means is that, though a being may have incredible magical prowess, if there is not enough natural magic to sustain the cast, it will fail.
4. Life itself is a source of magic. By living, you contribute to the amount of natural magic around you. This is mostly unnoticeable, but an incredibly powerful spell might just 'borrow' magic from nearby sapient beings. Whether or not your inherent magic will be tapped by another is a matter of will.
5. Inherent magic is similar to lung capacity. Growing it is painful, and requires consistent exertion. Inherent magic replenishes itself with the natural aura passively, but strong emotions can cause it to refill regardless of outside input.
Summary: Auras are incorporeal at rest, invisible to most. Magic is fueled by emotions and stored in nature.
