Well, in the 1996 Doctor Who movie The 8th Doctor was able to go to Gallifrey and back but once the new series started in 2005 the suposidly 9th Doctor said he destroyed Gallifrey. So it left us guessing either the 8th or 9th Doctor destroyed Gallifrey. It was the 9th Doctor. The John Hurt Doctor. Between 1996 and 2005 The Dpctor had not one but two secret regenerations going from Paul McGann to John Hurt and then Christopher Eccleston. so John Hurt was actually the 9th Doctor and Christopher was the 10th, David Tennant was the 11th, Matt Smith the 12th and that means Peter Capaldi is the last Doctor. Unless they find a way to change it so that The Doctor gets more regenerations. There is still the possibility I'm wrong and that John Hurt is the future of Peter Capaldi but I prefer the first theory. This is not my theory. I listened to this on Youtube not exact wording but oh well.
