Just using up a few minutes to post some random fanfic related stuff here. Mostly stuff related to my reading of stories.
What gets me to read a story in the first place:
-The story is at least 30k words long. Mostly it's because if it's shorter than that it will end before it has even started really capturing my attention.
-Story has a well written summary that gives an idea where the story starts without telling me everything that is going to happen.
What keeps me reading a story:
-The number one thing I want to have in stories is interesting characters with emotions and character development. I don't care that much if the interesting characters are OCs or interesting interpretations of regular characters.
-The next thing is that interesting things should be happening. Really this just amounts to the story having stuff happening. I also need to be able to understand what the events that happened are. Not that I need to understand everything about them, but if they are totally incomprehensible to me it's worse than nothing happening at all.
And here are a couple personal pet peeves of mine:
-Any story that claims to be part of the something-verse. If I see that anywhere in a summary or beginning of a story I won't even look at it further. I'm not willing to remember all those verses and I expect each story to do its own build up on what is different in that story.
-Almost canon stories. Aka stories that follow the exact plot of the show with only minor changes. These are just boring. I can re-watch the show for greater entertainment value.
