The kind of stuff that makes it to the feature box is extremely disappointing. What makes this disappointment even worse in my eyes is that I can't really blame it on anything but the community. I am not really familiar with the algorithm that chooses what to put in the feature box but I am willing to take Knighty at his word and assume that it is sound. The problem with the feature box is the community itself. You don't even have to be the author of a story on this site to be disappointed with what makes it to the feature box. Many of the stories that make it up there have shoddy plots, poor grammar, and a significant lack of editing yet people still push that thumbs up button and comment something stupid like "MOAR." What's even worse is when someone has a editor and it still looks like a first draft someone wrote when they were drunk.
It's not like it hasn't always been like this though. The past few days have been particularly bad and have really been getting on my nerves for some reason or another. Perhaps I actually read some of the stuff in the feature box. I don't really care to ruminate on it much longer to find out why. Something should change to fix this however. Whether Knighty tweaks the algorithm or the community stops mindlessly pressing like when a story has major issues.
I hope my work is a cut above that then

I read "The Mute Octave" just the other day and while it is not really my kind of fic it certainly is a cut above. At first glance I thought it was just another HiE that managed to hit the feature box though. Having "Human in Equestria" in the groups sort of threw me off a bit.
It has been a while since I wrote this and looking back on it my standards may have been rather high. MLP was really the first fandom that I have ever really read fan-fictions for. Since then I've done some wandering through the wasteland that is fanfiction.net and it has been a bit of an eye opener. Perhaps it is because it is a little easier to get a good fic noticed on this site but some of the stuff that is actually favourite and reviewed on ff.net is downright painful to read.
FimFic is still better than FanFic XD
