In-game Apocalypse · 1:51am Jun 26th, 2013
I recently downloaded the Apocalypse Mod for Dawn of War Soulstorm, and boy is it tough. The enemies are many times more ruthless than they were before, not to mention now I can play as the Tyranids. Those things are, hands down, the most formidable faction I've fought against. I can only imagine how much more difficult they are in the sequels. Overall, a kick-ass mod. There are still some things about it that kinda bug me, some of which will confuse those who don't have what I call "In-game Honor".
1: They remove the limit on certain units.
So, basically one can create as many, for example, Terminators and Predator Tanks as they please. They've upped the Squad and Vehicle Cap, which I appreciate, but I still sort of agreed to the whole "only two 'so-and-sos' on the battlefield at a time" thing. because if there is one thing gamers want in games like these, it's control and balance. So by removing the limit of how many special units you can make, you kinda shot yourself in the foot there. Because the enemy your fighting also has limitless units to throw at you, which can be pretty scary when you see an army of Bloodthirsters coming at you.
2: The Tyranids are extremely overpowered.
Like I said before, the Tyranids in this mod are the most formidable foe I've faced; mostly due to the fact that they are limitless in every aspect I can possibly think up. Those Zoanthropes are straight-up hard to get rid of, especially when they're blowing you to smithereens with their explosion attacks.
3: The Commanders have been either overpowered as well or nerfed.
The Primary Commanders, like the Warboss or the Imperial Guard General, are modified from the campaign. They can be upgraded with all the wargear you can earn from the campaign through research. Some of the Commanders have been modified for the better, while others have been downgraded to the point where I asked myself: "What happened to the poor guy?"
So yeah, not saying that it's a terrible mod, it's just not what I expected in terms of perfection. I had my hopes a little too high for the things I wanted in the mod. Then I remembered: "Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment". I mentally slapped myself in the back of the head when that came up. It's a fun mod, play at your own risk.
