Equestria Girls Review! · 4:23am Jun 24th, 2013
'Allo! VeryConfused here.
I recently saw 'Equestria Girls'.
...
Y'know what?
....
It was... adequate.
Yeah.
Not spectacular, not terrible, just adequate.
Let me expand on that.
The strong point in it was somewhat unsurprisingly; the comedy. Twilight adapting to being human caused some funny slapsticky situations á la 'Mr. Bean', they definately extract a few chortles from me. There were also fandom and continuity nods that provided some funniness. Also, there was a running gag with Fluttershy being hit with things (It's funnier than it sounds and is actually really cute, ohgodthatsoundsawful) Pinkie Pie was doing her best to please the audience, and was probably had the funniest moments in the movie. One that stands out to me was near the beginning, Pinkie managed to get her limbs tangled, and when she unwound, the transforming noise from Transformers played.
Sunset Shimmer was a decent villain, a combination of a general MLP villain, a Bond villain, and Regina George from 'Mean Girls'.
What surprised me was how much I enjoyed the chemistry between Flash Sentry and Twilight, considering how little screen time it got and Flash could be described as likeble but bland at best. The relationship had this adorably awkward sort of feel going for it.
What I liked least about Equestria Girls was the pacing. Yeah, I know, who am I to talk, but seriously. The pacing was too fast when it should have been slow, and too slow whenever it should have been fast.
Another thing I didn't like was the aesthetic. Everyone looked like they were an anorexic 'Doug' character with all the wierd-ass skin tones and really skinny bodies. One of the things I like the most about FIM is the sort-of chubby cute character designs, and Equestria Girls only managed to preserve some of that cuteness.
Equestria Girls also had a lot of missed potential. The plot, while OK, could have been much more inspired, there was not enough screen time for the mane six, and there are so many ramifications, moral and social implications of an alternate universe with duplicate beings that EQG didn't even begin to try and toy with! Not that I expected it to, though.
Also, spoiler warning: Shimmer gets off too easy for turning into a demon, hypnotizing the students into zombie slaves, attempting to kill Twilight and breaking the school's front wall.
TL;DR:
I'd give it a 3.5 chocolate mooses out of 5 Batmares.
Also, watch Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing. Completely unrelated, but it's good.
