Here's my idea-spew, just a random bit of stuff loosely pertaining to a story idea in the works.
A life out of control
What about the characters in video games? No matter how many times you die, you can just respawn and try it again. Drown to death? Reload and search for another air pocket. What if the character could feel and think and remember, but was bound by some unknowable force to carry out the will of another? Forced to suffer and die over and over only to be reborn and die again. They live in the pauses, when the game is off, and can be summoned from their life at the whim of the Controller.
When the game is first bought, the character is excited and happy. Meeting new characters and gaining experience and abilities, maybe even falling in love along the way, only to die painfully and start over again. Learning about life from the characters they meet, only able to live in the pauses at places they've reached in the game.

Get married and move into a house farther in the game, then die and can't return as the controller stops playing.
Character quickly hates the game, tired of the constant death and pain as the controller plays the game incessantly. As time wears on and the game is beat, is isn't played as much and the life in the pauses stretches on. Eventually, happiness is found.
