Long time no talk · 2:31am May 29th, 2013
Hey, readers/followers/people that stumbled upon my writing and decided to give it the time of day, how are you all doing? If you're one of the people that don't watch me, but have favorited my story "Exiled unto Dawn," then I am sorry if this is an inconvenience to find in your notification box, but I want to talk about the fic for a bit and I thought it'd be nice to give you all the option to read on if you want. It's better than putting up a huge box of author's notes.
My last journal was written on the 20th of January in a fevered rush to mash my keyboard to oblivion. This one will not be like that, because it has been one of those days where I can't summon the energy to be the slayer of keyboards. Humidity, man. It's a killer.
Anywho, a lot has changed for me since that last journal. For starters, the whole school semester ended, so Summer break 2013 is a go. I landed a job and felt the unbridled joy of seeing the numbers in my bank account increase. I actually made friends and all that happy shit. That's why some updates have been a long time coming.
I say "some updates" but I only really mean "Exiled." There's something about that story, let me tell you. When I first sat down to write it, like any story I have written, it started with an image. The image behind "Exiled" was originally that of a library in the middle of winter. There was snow on the ground, it was dark, and the windows were well-lit and inviting. There was a cobbled road that ran past the entrance and to the other buildings around, but only the library had lights. Mind you, this was a normal building and not the Golden Oaks library. The image that came after that was Twilight walking down the road to Ponyville and steaming against the cold because of her spell and so on. But every single time I open that document and I scroll down, reading snippets on the way to the last place I left off, I feel the same warmth that I always imagined a person would find if they walked in to that library on that winter evening. It makes the story extremely fun to write. It makes me want to go back and add more, even though I am absolutely bastardizing the canon materials.
Earlier today, after I submitted the last chapter for "Orders" and eagerly refreshed the page over and over like a kid waiting for Santa (I'll be honest, I love it when people acknowledge my work. I am sorry if that sounds too selfish.) another thought crept in, and that was: Now what? Because of the aforementioned reasons, "Orders" took me a really long time to finish, so every time I came back to the story, I was still in that same part. Now that it is finally done, I don't entirely know what to do for it. For a sense of context, the Word doc. is at 78 pages. Compared to some of the things I've written, both fanfiction and original, that is a lot. At times I'm afraid I spend a little too much time in that warm and wuzzy state, so I already know that I want to make the next bit more action oriented. I also want to focus on some of the other characters, as the story so far is dominated by Twilight, Applejack, and Rainbow, but can you blame a guy for sticking to his favorite ponies? Spoiler alert: You can, but you shouldn't.
I don't have the slightest clue when I will write up another part to "Exiled," as I have at least 2 original ideas in my mind at the moment, and putting a deadline on fanfiction has never been a good idea for me. So, it'll happen when it happens, and I appreciate everyone who stops by to read it. This post has gone on for quite a bit (There has been behind-the-scenes editing), but I will admit that it was rather fun typing up some of the process behind a certain story of mine. I'll most likely do this again for another story, but I'll hold off for a month or so. Wouldn't want to dominate those notification boxes, now would I? Until the next journal, I hope you all take care and have a wonderful day.
