Notes: Chapter Nine · 6:28am Mar 22nd, 2013
We're really stepping into the endgame of Part One here. This is where it gets fun.
Luna goes up against the entity that traps her, though the consequences of that aren't entirely apparent yet. I do hope people enjoy the fight there, brief though it was. It is intended in part as pay-off for wading through Luna's extended trip of self-discovery. For anyone who recognises small chunks of description there, yes, it is a homage/reference/plug for Stephen Donaldson's The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. Absolutely fantastic books, and Donaldson's prose is at a level I certainly cannot even approach.
Twilight and Trixie have some routine dialogue, then we step into Daerev and Rainbow. I'll admit, of the 64,000 words in Part One, this was the scene that caused me the most worry. Rainbow certainly has changed--a lot--from her canon character. She is more thoughtful, more emotionally aware. Scenes like this are why I'm so adamant that readers look at Lethe before coming here. Characterisation builds directly out of those events, and that's part of what this scene is doing.
As always, enjoy!
