So I got a question this fine morning. · 12:53pm Feb 28th, 2013

TheSlayer048:
On a scale of 1-10 how hard would you say it is to write a fan fic?
from: Heavy Rains, 2 minutes, 14 seconds ago
Heavy Rains:
Nice AJ. Honestly it depends on what you want to write. Video game crossovers are not that hard (unless we're talking about something like Fallout: Equestria.) compared to original idea fic. For instance to write a chapter of The Dark Ones it takes me about an hour or two. While writing a chapter for A Second Chance: Fading Memories... takes me about a day (sometimes an entire week.). Original fics require more time because you have no existing matter or lore to work off of for your fic; leaving solely you to think out the characters, plot developments, and length.
Basically each genre also has its own difficulty to write: Slice of life = 3, Adventure = 4-6, Comedy = 6, Dark = 9, Alt. Universe = 5-9, Romance = 7, Crossovers = 3-5, Sad = 9-10, Tragedy = 10.
Slice of life is basically everyday events and conundrums that a reader is able to relate to.
Adventure is an epic. A journey that spans many chapters in a tale that sojourns to a variety of places.
Comedy... well that's self-explanatory really.
Dark is one of the harder genres due to the commitment to the mindset, You have to reach some of the despicable aspects of life and portray them at their worst to pull this off.
Alt. Universe can range from the changing of an episode to crossing over into a different dimension and varies with creativity or originality.
Romance is hard to effectively attach a reader to a character shipping as not everyone likes the same things. (And if your writing a clopfic, there's a little more to it than senseless carnal desires.)
Crossovers, as I said, vary with whatever you are working off of and vary as such.
Sad... the difficulty with the Sad genre is creating an emotional attachment between a reader and the protagonist of your fic. A prime example of this being done in its purest form would be a fic called Together In The End by Trials. As the internet says... Feels man.
Tragedy. I find it the hardest to write because of the connection a writer creates when he or she writes a character. As a writer I leave a piece of myself in every character I write dialogue or descriptions of. And having those characters fail or meet an untimely end may feel like losing a piece of yourself. As such Tragedy is the hardest in my book.
In conclusion: Differing genres. Differing difficulty.
So what do you guys think the hardest genre is to write?
For me, comedy. I'm just not that funny. With raging depression and emotional problems, it's much easier for me to write dark stories than happy stories. Also, for me personally, shipping is hard. Because what ships haven't been done, and why are most of them really shitty?
873747 Not much into comedy either as I happen to be quite unfunny.
As for shippings... well I'm fairly certain EVERY rational shipping has been done. (The only few left are ships such as TwistxBig Mac et cetera et cetera) And as for them being shitty... The world may never know.
Honestly... I'd like to see a Shining Armor x Big Mcintosh. Might look for one now actually....
873760 Okay, you got me. I'll post the first chapter of Stallions tomorrow.
873768 Unless you'd prefer to take your time that would be great!
873782 Well, I only have chapter 1 done. I'm a slow writer when I don't have my own laptop.
873785 ahh that would do it. I too am slow, even with a laptop, seeing how the last update for anything of mine was over a month ago... I should get back to writing soon... eh maybe tomorrow.
TheSlayer048 sent me the exact same message, but I just kind of gave him a simple answer ; I just told him it depends on how much effort you want to put into a fic.
By the way, I'm looking over what genres you labeled as having the most difficulty, and I must say, it looks like I've gotten myself in some deep shit and didn't even realize it.
873829 If I were in your shoes then yes the shit would be neck deep. But you can pull it off. I'm sure of it.

I sent the message to a few other people as well... I'm just interested to see what people say is all
873842 To which I have voiced my opinion and I hope it helped.

GOD DAMNIT I CAN'T RESIST IT
Well, considering that all I've ever written is mostly comedy and some romance, I can't speak for the others, but yes. I would agree that sad/tragedy stories are by far the most difficult type of stories to write, which is probably why you don't see too many and it's not all that mainstream. Romance is obviously by far the most popular genre, followed by probably comedy. You almost never see dark fics featured as well
Because it targets a more specific audience usually, and it is indeed probably very difficult to write effectively.
Despite having issues with depression, I've managed to have some success with both comedy and romance, not sure how though. I guess it's because writing comedy helps me forget about the woes of real life for a little while.

Yay, someone who believes in me!
Leaving all the complicated genre-mixing aside, I agree and disagree with the ease of writing crossovers, Rains.
It depends, really, because as much as you have background for both parts, you have to juggle both 'verses well and blend them seamlessly to have a good story. You might feel like TDO is easy to write, but that is because MLP hasn't bled into Metro yet, or vice-versa. The accounts are still clearly defined as being each of its own universe between the perspectives of the mane six and Artyom, which is what makes it a breeze.
