500 views, and some News (I'm sorry, but that new Chapter 4 is not a new chapter) · 4:04pm Feb 26th, 2013
I've reached 500 views, and almost 300 views on one chapter alone. Wow, thank you guys so much!
Before we begin this blogpost, let me make it clear that Chapter 4 is not a new chapter, it is "Arrival", and the new chapter 1 is just the first half of what used to be all "Convulsion"; it used to be two chapters, and I've returned it to that state.
How about some (short) history? A long time ago, I hated fan fiction. About 7 years ago, I swore off reading it after reading one too many bad ones. Fast forward to the end of summer in 2011, and I was introduced to Friendship is Magic by my brother, and I loved it. Killed it in a week. Fast forward to the end of Season 2, and I could see the coming void in my life from lack of episodes, and I wasn't happy. I was then pointed at Fallout Equestria, which had recently finished. I was super skeptical, as I wasn't used to grimdark fics and I was worried how in the world could one of my favorite game series and favorite television shows could be combined like that. I went in anyways, breaking my (then) 6 year vow of not reading fics. I consumed it as if it was water and I was a dehydrated man in a desert. After that, I started reading a bunch, but it never crossed my mind to try my hand at one till the middle of last summer, when I was struck with a story idea I just had to share with you guys. That idea is Modulation.
Enough about that, though. I have some announcements to make. After getting some advice, I've decided a few things.
First, I've decided to split up some chapters. A long time ago, back around August and September, I had a long debate with myself and decided to combine chapters 1 and 2 into what is now chapter 1. Sharp readers could tell due to chapter 1 being called Convulsion on my story page, but being called The Catalyst in the actual document. What does this mean for you guys who have already read up to chapter 3 (oh, I have some things to talk about with chapter 3)?
Nothing so far.
Splitting the chapters up will still keep you in the right place, and you'll be able to tell which chapter is which by the name. If you've read everything, you'll still be on Arrival, only Arrival may become chapter 4 or 5. In the long run, however, it'll mean shorter chapters overall, and quicker updates! It'll also mean better pacing, something that I still sweat about til this day. You'll see.
Second, rewrites and edits. A shit ton of rewrites and edits. I just read my first chapter again because I finally convinced someone to give me a critique, and with time my author goggles came off and I could see the mess that I had made. I deeply apologize, you guys; I really thought I had all the amateur mistakes taken care of. Missing words, confusing sentence structure, and I've been told I have an improper use of the word "their" in my story somewhere! Oh dear Luna, I can't believe I did that to you! I'm going back, and editing, and will actually put the current chapter on hold to clean up my mess. The edits wont take too long, however, as chapter 1 is almost finished and I only took half a day to do it.
Third is going to be the worst news, and I'm a little embarrassed by it. Spoilers for those who haven't read Arrival yet. Skip this part if you're not there, as hopefully it won't even be relevant to you when you catch up.
As you know, a certain unicorn has jumped to the front of the story, and you may be confused about her relevance. As my most recent reviewer said, he was confused and had thought I had forgotten my main story. At first I didn't worry about it, as that's what was intended, but then he asked a question that really caught me off guard. "What I find strange is that she hasn't even thought twice about the blood covered Twilight. Speaking of, is that story over?" OH MY GOODNESS, I FORGOT SOME CALLBACKS IN CHAPTER 3! I'm so sorry, It's such a novice mistake. I know it's my first fic, but how could I fall to such a trivial thing? I had finished Arrival about 2 months before I posted it, and read it a couple of times and showed it to some friends and they understood what I was doing so I published it. Unfortunately, there are some parts of narrative I missed, and I'm going to have to do some heavy editing to get it back in shape. The story is going to stay the same, but I have got to handle some business. You may have to read that chapter again, and I apologize deeply.
Those of you who haven't read Arrival can start reading again.
TL;DR
Thanks for the views.
1. I'm splitting up chapters.
2. I'm editing chapters.
3. Chapter 3 is going to require an important rewrite.
Thank for you for sticking with me. I'm learning as I'm writing. I'm trying to deliver a compelling story, and sometimes I feel like I've bit off more than I can chew with everything I have in my head, but I feel if I walk it one step at a time, I'll be ok. Everything will be OK.
One More Thing... you guys should expect a new chapter soonish, give or take 2 weeks. Life is going smooth, which means no more interruptions!
Edit: Whoa snap, what a crazy last two days. I had to go back and edit so many silly mistakes in chapters 1 through 3, but nothing compared for what I found in 3. I found complete SECTIONS of my story MISSING. I don't know how so many of you read over it like it was ok, and didn't call me out! Anyways, I had to go to my google docs account and dig out an old revision to fix it. Now, everything should be fine. Chapters 1 through 3 are ready to go, and chapter 4 should be done tomorrow night. It's probably going to have a bunch of extra plot elements, so you may need to read it again.
No, I didn't do this for extra views.
Yes, I'm a noob, this is my first fanfic, and I'm learning as I go. Thank you for your patience ;)
