Top Ten Favourite Songs · 10:02pm Feb 24th, 2013
Music is a very important aspect in life. It helps you relax, have fun or just simply think, and I largely feel that, without music, writing would be much harder. It serves as an inspiration for any creativeness, really, either through the lyrics of a song or the actual sound. Here, as listed below, are the songs that I feel have made my life much easier to cope with, both in terms of my writing and my normal day-to-day activities, and I feel that sharing them with someone may have the same effect. One of the simplest pleasures known to humanity is listening to music, and I feel that we all need a bit of music in our lives. Hope you enjoy.
10) Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Give it Away
Silly, spontaneous, catchy. Makes you want to do a sick air guitar/drum solo. What else could you want?
9) Kings of Leon - I Want You
You, apparently. Still, 'Kings of Leon' are one of the most underrated bands ever.
8) Awolnation - Sail
No words, just awesomeness.
7) Nirvana - All Apologies
This is true Nirvana, in that it has meaningful lyrics and a relaxing tune.
6) Coldplay - Lost
Coldplay are known for their thoughtful lyrics, but that's not why I like this one. It's the drums.
5) Flobots - Handlebars
One of the songs I didn't like at first. You have to listen to the lyrics to understand, otherwise it just seems like the singer is boasting a whole lot.
4) Coldplay - Strawberry Swing
Okay, I really like the music video on this one. It's a work of art, and that's not even saying anything about the tune.
3) Radiohead - Climbing Up the Walls
This is such a powerful song, both in lyrics and music. If you're ever in need of thought-provoking music, this is the piece.
2) Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc
I've always been a big fan of Gorillaz for their electronic-esque music, and I know that this is their most popular piece, but it is for a reason.
1) Radiohead - No Surprises
Dat music video. Dat xylophone. Dose thoughtful lyrics. There's no surprise why this is here. What you thought was a drone-y singing voice was actually thoughtful, wonderful words. That was my first response to Radiohead, about three years ago, but it all changes when you listen to what Yorke is singing about. 'A handshake of carbon monoxide' has to be my favourite line. It's not like the singer doesn't want death — he's not fighting it; it appears as a friendly handshake. He isn't opposed to death, so it's essentially like 'meeting' death. The song is about life, about how it's a desperate struggle. You want to find 'a job that slowly kills you', in the pursuit of money, you want to settle down, live a boring life with 'no alarms and no surprises', and finally, you're in denial of wanting it. The singer tries to justify wanting such a shitty, boring life by sugarcoating it, for example, 'such a pretty house, such a pretty garden'. It's my favourite song, not just for the music, but for importance.
#2 is one of my favorites as well.
