My Two Cents (About You-Know-What) · 3:34am Feb 19th, 2013
I'm not too happy. I'm not freaking out, and I'm certainly not going to ragequit, but I'm not especially happy either. I never liked the old "Twilight Becomes An Alicorn" trope back when it only happened in fanfiction, so seeing it become irrevocable canon is almost enough to make me cringe. The episode handled it well enough to avoid shark-jumpage, but the implications for future seasons and for the fandom reek of unpleasantness.
I've seen many fans, even those who are unenthusiastic about Twilight's ascension to princesshood, argue in its defense by saying that her personality will not change, and that she'll still be the same old bookish, adorkable unicorn alicorn we all know and love. Fair enough, but it's not her personality that I'm concerned about. Twilight may remain adorkable, but she's no longer the simple librarian of whom we were so fond. Like it or not, her new responsibilities will change - and in many cases, limit - what she can do and how she can act. Any story dealing with her, be it a fanfic or an actual episode, will have to take her princesshood into account. That could very well mean no more fun slice-of-life stories, no more hanging out with her friends, no more picnics and slumber parties. If Twilight is going to be a princess, she'll have to act like one; otherwise, what was the point of giving her wings in the first place?
At the risk of sounding like an old stick-in-the-mud, I must say I'm a wee bit upset to see the status quo so grossly disrupted. By opening the show up to new storytelling possibilities, they've permanently sealed off the old model, which in my opinion was working out just fine. I still trust the writers not to ruin the show; it's just that now, it seems like an entirely different show, and it's one that appeals to me a great deal less.
Be seeing you.
