My reaction to the season three finale · 11:12pm Feb 16th, 2013
As much as I enjoyed the music, it really was a lift in quality (plus Celestia singing!) the whole episode seemed like what is termed an "ass pull" from the start. Really, the episode hinges on Twilight making an elementary mistake in magic - reading a half-finished spell aloud. Seriously, that is a fairly standard magical rule - you never read a spell that is half written out loud or that you don't know the effects of. Star Swirls spell fits both those categories. (see below)
I don't think someone who makes such a simple mistake is ready to be a princess. It felt rushed, and the ending was so convoluted and rather nonsensical. Also, now you're going to have fanfic writers doing self inserts where they turn into ponies. They'll point to this and say "See? Celestia has the power to change a ponies race, so she can change someone's' species!" It is plain the writers were doing their best not to make this suck too bad, but given the requests (demands?) of Hasbro they didn't have much to work with.
I'm hoping against hope, that someone at Hasbro realises that they've stuffed up and redacts this somehow - perhaps by Twilight saying she doesn't want to be a princess any more. And now that I think on it, she doesn't look like the other Alicorns at all, no longer horn or increase in height - she's the same but with wings. So maybe she isn't a true Alicorn, but was given wings as a visual shorthand for "Twilight is a princess."? As much as I love Twilight, the whole "princess Twilight" thing makes no sense to me. In the words of Captain Jack Sparrow, "They're just giving the bloody title away now."
Also the five that had their cutie marks swapped plainly felt ill at ease with their "destiny" as depicted by their cutie marks, so why did they not try something else - as we saw, they plainly still had their previous skills. And what exactly is the spell supposed to do? It makes no mention of turning into an Alicorn, To be honest, it mostly sounds like bad poetry.
Still, I look forward to the rumoured movie and season 4.
I just downloaded it.
I still have to finish seasons 1 & 2 and catch up on
plentya lota metric fuck-ton of things I missed, if I ever want to continue writing here (and get my canon right). I guess I'm not a true Brony
