    New Format

Well this is new... I kinda like it, it's a little annoying the notification box thing is on the left now but if that's my only complaint it's not that bad, and I like the new stylized look. This is something I could get used to.

Anybody else every get the feeling when they're writing, that you just know you have to make something seam larger then it is? Because if you don't the next thing you say will seam to big, and you need to make it small by comparison? Because i'm getting that a lot recently. As my Authors Comment on this weeks chapter states, the next chapter will be the climax of the story, or as close to a

So i'm not going to go into to much detail but life has been throwing me a lot of curve balls lately, but i'm finally nearing the point where I can put out the next chapter. Sunday would be the latest possible day you'd see it but you could start checking as early as tomorrow should I get enough time today. Thank you all for your patience.

    A Stupid Smart Decition

So today I turned in a short story for my English teacher to grade me on, he has made it very clear that he's planning to read everyone's stories and grade them to IB standards, the prompt for which was simple. Write a story no less then a thousand words that has no defined main character and at least one symbol that occurred multiple times in the text.

Changes and Wings · 4:33pm Feb 16th, 2013

So as most of you know Twilight is now an Alicorn, with wings and title and such... and i'm ok with that, or at least I think I am, this is by far the biggest development this show has had so far in my opinion, and while I hate to follow it with a change of my own, this does bare addressing.

So i'll just save the small talk and get strait to business, (i'm kind of pulling a blank in the light hearted joke banter department right now anyway.) It happened before, which I don't think to many of you have read considering i'm sending this directly to my Workhorse audience as well, was originally intended to show in later chapters that the mane six all became Alicorns at roughly the same time, and the plot seriously depended on that note. Since this new development, i'm sorry to say but I just don't think I have a desire to continue that particular story. Its not that I don't know I could just slap a Alternate universe tab on it and keep going, but my will to continue with that line of thinking has diminished so and as of today i'm going to cancel that fic. My apologies to those of you who read it and enjoyed it but I just can't see myself continuing it.

On the other hand though, I now have a major problem with The Workhorse that begs my attention. I don't want to stop that fic, on the contrary, I want to do at least six more chapters if not ten, but I need to find a place to work in Alicorn Twilight. I think I have something that would work but I really need to think it over. The Workhorse is going to continue, I just have some new planning to do.

Until next time then, Hail to Twilight! Our new and glorious leader! (ah, I did have one remark somewhere after all.)

... Fuck....
Might as well delete any stories you have made before then.
After all, if they ain't canon, have them shot and taken back where they were never born.
There was actually a time where Twilight wasn't an alicorn? Surely you lie.

Pfft. Now everyone is going to force feed that alicorn Twi crap down our throats.
Its in the Gospel, they said!

You don't have to follow the show cannon, you're writing fan fiction. I have no intention of altering my TwiMacVerse to fit the canon of the show. People are forgetting that we don't have to follow every single canon aspect of this show. In the end, this is still just a TV show. It's fictional. and our writing is fictional and we're writing it for fun.

Well, that could have gone over better, mayhaps I worded that poorly.

I'm not saying Take down everything that doesn't follow the cannon, quite to the contrary, I think there's a very good reason the Alternate Universe button exists on this site. Without it we would have never seen the likes of Fallout Equestria or the various other fics that have gained popularity similar to it. But while I agree it is unnecessary to say you must follow even the slightest inkling of show cannon, I must convey to you this particular story was the brainchild of a very specific way of thinking I used to explain the existence of Alicorns. Now that I can no longer apply this way of thinking, I've just lost interest in continuing it. There's nothing wrong with this story because it is not cannon, but the main driving factor I had for writing it no longer exists. Let me put it this way, I wrote Portal to Another World because I wanted to show how the ponies would act in our universe. If time was contorted so I was writing that fic right now, and the show did something that said, oh i don't know, humans lived in Equestria and Equestria is in fact Earth, and the ponies knew about humans, I still work on that fic. Obviously the scene where Twilight met a human and didn't know what type of creature it was would diverge from cannon, but my overall goal, to show how the ponies would act on Earth, would still be there and I'd have something to keep me motivated. My motivation for It Happened Before was exploring Alicorn creation. I no longer need to do that, so I have no motivation. If you want to argue about if i think Fics where the author is ill motivated to continue them should be take down, i'll say absolutely, that's why I made this decision and that's why i'm sticking to it, I'm only taking it down because I've lost interest, not because its noncanon.

As for The Workhorse, I know I don't HAVE to change it to fit cannon, but I figure i'm not to far in the story that I can't work it in easily and might as well right? If nothing else it will give me more to work with and you'll get to see another chapter because of it. I'm not upset or anything about the cannon change, I was just trying to let people know I might need some planning time to rearrange a few upcoming plot points.

I really hope that clears up my opinion.

835499 Pfft, is there even a point to writing fanfiction?
First Luna, then Vinyl, then Twilight's BROTHER!? And now this!
When I came into this fandom, I didn't expect to get really covered FUBAR from six angles till morning.
I am still having panic attacks from that Halloween episode last year.
GAAAH....

Well...um... there seams to be a meaning in there somewhere but i'm hard pressed to find it. The only part I think I can comment on is your original question.

Yes, there most indeed is a point. I can't speak for everypony, but for me FIMFics are here to help us explore things the show will not or else can not answer. Questions that burn inside us that we want to see resolutions to. What would a wartime Equestria look like? What would happen if Lyra was element of Generosity instead of Rarity? What does Cloudsdale look like? How would ponies see a human? The show may never tell us these things, but we can provide our own answers in the written word. I write fics to answer these questions for myself and show others my viewpoint while hopefully at the same time entertaining them. To stop writing them, i'd lose a major form of personal conveyance, so that's why it's important.

838478 Perhaps. But every time something is added into the canon, it feels like everyone seems to have some sort of unspoken obligation to keep up with the main trend and immediately update their universes to conform suit. You know that time when Twilight Sparkle didn't used to have a brother? I have seen quite a few stories give her some decent siblings, even sister mind you. But now with Shining Armor in the picture? You can forget about even trying now. If you do, take a gander at how many people are going to rage at you for going completely off canon? Thank God that they haven't read the S1 era fics, or they would have thrown a hissy fit indeed.

I hate how this fandom seems to automatically conform to whatever is put in canon, even if it can be sometimes extraordinarily stupid. Now if you want to give Twilight Sparkle a previously unknown sibbling, you can throw that right out the window, because it has been canonized that she does in fact have a sibbling. This removes whatever fascination that is left for experimenting with that story point. At least before that episode, you had the flexibility to experiment with the universe and throw your own twist to it. These days, if you even try it without a mention of the "True" brother of sister Twilight, then you will be flamed. Royally. Hey, I don't mind the characters themselves, but every fic I have read since that point has either discarded or have rewritten their universe and storylines to follow suit, whatever previous development that was made be completely damned. The same can be said of Luna's fanon given personality before she officially got her own episode. But after the fact, everyone pretty much dumped that Luna into a dark alleyway, never to be seen again. Now if you even TRY to write a story with her fanon Season 1 appearance and personality... I can't even describe the reactions. Now if you don't write Luna with her bloody royalty vaunting personality, people will bitch and moan at you for writing Luna out of character. Pfft. As if they even remember that she didn't even HAVE one, besides two lines of dialogue exactly in the first season.

But that was enough for us creating a whole freaking history behind that character. We didn't need anything more.
That is why I liked this community to begin with, I adore how people go to such efforts to create original content with just a plain pallet. (Original as in giving flat characters a well developed backstory.) But now with S4 on the horizon? Fanon seems to be considered a dangerous tarnish that must be cleansed and purged for any so called "inaccuracies" before they become too large to handle.

I can understand where you're coming from, some of the best stories I've read on this site now fall way out of cannon and have been discontinued because of that. The fandom as a whole just moves on and forgets them when they fall out and good authors are forgotten if they don't adapt. But I also see the other side of the argument, why would people want to read about a question that was already answered in the show, such as if Twilight had siblings. It loses some appeal when the show gives us such a definitive answer. I think the major problem is the show has absolute say and writers here have none.

Although we're just preaching to the choir saying these things to each other.

I am not quite sure where the buck my fan fics are going to go now? Maybe my massive (but otherwise useless) brain will think of something witty?

I'm not counting on it... :applejackunsure:
