Well, we had a good run, but it's all over now.
Nothing left to do but burn all the fanfics.
Friendship is Magic has officially jumped the shark.
For the record, I'm not leaving the fandom. I'm just disheartened.
This is a pretty severe blow to all Twilight Sparkle fans. To those of you who write stories, will you embrace alicorn Twilight moving forward, or will you continue to tell stories which take place before she becomes a princess?
I'm intrigued to see where they go with this. I'd also be curious to see if alicorn Twilight was part of Lauren Faust's vision for the show.
EDIT: I will try to withhold judgement until I see the episode. Assuming that it's only temporary, I have no problem with it. If Twilight is to remain an alicorn forever though... well, we'll cross that bridge if we come to it.

as I understood, the season finale will be a Body swap type of episode, so everything will be back to Pseudo-Statu quo.

As a fan fic writer, I'll do my best to accept canon as it is. No point yelling and screaming (or abandoning ship) at something you can't change (you can still write whatever you want, though).
I'm going to ignore that it ever happened and continue not writing stories about regular old unicorn twilight as always. Fuck cannon.

I suddenly had the thought of Twilight hitting her head, and believing her name was Buttercup, and forced to May Blueblood while Rarity shots "inconceivable!" at every chance she gets.

It's tragic. Twilight makes all these wonderful friends. Now, she's too important. It's like Harry Potter or Anakin Skywalker. Why does Twilight have to be a super special chosen one alicorn?

As for how this is going to affect my fics, one of my fics is set ten years after the events portrayed in the show, I'll find some way to have her decide to go back to being a regular old unicorn, it can't be any worse a cop out than this. There's just more story potential at present for her staying as a unicorn. Though I wouldn't mind the series ending with this so much. Or maybe MLP will end up taking the same route as Reboot, taking a continuous story line that becomes epic. Maybe Twilight could end up having to race Gilda for something?

Since fanfic, by its nature, selectively includes and interprets canon, this will change nothing about how I use Twillight.
Lauren said she had a special destiny to fulfill sine s1. I think we all sort of knew it'd happen eventually, we just all thought it'd be at least a few 26 episod seasons down the road... I gave up and accepted Alicorn Twilight upon seeing the toy with her with wings back during s2, this new one though is much more elaborate then the first one, and less glitter at least :P
I think the final nail in the coffin was the deal Hasbro did to make it EASIER and FASTER to put in toy products into their shows, and S2 was merely a start/experiment for Hasbro. Now, you'll just see it more in other shows. FiM is just going to have to do what they are told. Seeing how all of them working on the show, sort of solidifies that whole "Hasbro only cares about marketing new toys and gives no fucks as to how it affects a show" that Hasbro has stated actually is their sole purpose for the show since they asked Lauren to revive the MLP franchise.
It's a sad day, but she'll still be Twilight.... she'll just have to watch her friends die around her one pony at a time and see their family grow old and die as well. Still, it lets Hasbro focus on newer pony toys. I still expect s4 to introduce lots of new characters till we're weened out of having to rely on unpopular toys like Celestia and Luna. In Hasbro's eyes anyways. S4 will be interesting.
And besides the series jumped the shark back in season one episode 3. XP

By being the personal student of Celestia (the day) and both saving and befriending Luna (the night), the entire "link between day and night" association was already fulfilled by Season 2. Why would we foresee that canon would borrow fanon and turn Twilight into an alicorn?

Stories. This is going to be a temporary thing, the spoilers said it was an accident - which means she'll either give it up at the end - choosing her friends over a crown and increased power, or it'll be fixed for her.
Besides, she's already all-powerful. Don't forget her little magic trance. It's also been foreshadowed since the start - and especially during Crystal Kingdom.
No reason to get disheartened or anything, so far every episode of season 3 has been a reference to popular/the more numerous fanfics. And Alicorn Twilight is a very popular subject, despite what the hipsters claim. It'll be nothing permanent, just a nod to Twilight.

You know what I do when something like this could majorly effect a fanfiction that I am currently writting? I just pretend that my story takes place in another timeline. Seriously, I will not bitch and moan about an episode, much less one that has not been aired yet, that the creators have every right to do so. Why? Because, they own the property and they get paid for it. When it does come out, I'll accept what it is given to me, whether I ended up loving it or hating it. And, it will not make me think any less of the show because it is not the only episode. There are plenty of good episodes that I could just rewatch again. And, if the show do continue after this, I'll keep watching it. Why? Because I am a brony. I just can't fucking help it. Dear Twilight Almighty, I can't help it.
