    Composure 7 status update

Update on the chapter. Minor delays - my proofreaders made some good suggestions I'm taking on board.

Composure 7 should be out between Saturday evening to Monday.

    Thank you for your patience.

The draft of Composure, Chapter 7, is complete.

I'll be tidying it up and running it past my prereaders and editors. My tentative e.t.a. is Saturday 10th August.

This year has been immensely difficult for me, so I thank you all for your patience and understanding.

All the best, and I'll see you on Saturday.

With regards to my computer problems... · 6:18pm Jan 18th, 2013

Tentatively resolved, though it required a full system reinstall. I also discovered that the last computer repair place I went to in order to fix a fried HDD thought it'd be clever to give me a 360GB one in lieu of my dear departed 500GB one. Plus they installed Windows 7 32-bit instead of 64.

Moral of the story, be vigilant, and keep your receipts! And make friends with computer programmers.

Work continues in Composure, though I'm forced to do some reconstructive surgery on it as a good chunk of it was lost in the transition. I thought I saved the document in my external HDD, but in fact what I had saved was... a shortcut. A shortcut to a Word document. Because that sounds like something anyone would ever want to do, copy a docx shortcut into an external device.

At any rate, I'll keep everyone posted. Won't be long now.

I clone my hard drives every two months to a large 2TB HD using Clonezilla. If any of them fail I can restore them exactly as they were to a new hard drive. Just an idea.

ur a butt

update already

Just use something like google docs or drop box.

Was doing something similar, but don't have the cash for a new hard drive. We'll survive.

No ur a butt

Sorry to hear of your woes. Good luck with the reconstruction!

No, not the computer programmers, anyone but them!
<- Is secretly a computer programmer :rainbowlaugh:

But seriously. any IT personnel would be a good friend to have, if nothing else, we can fix your computer or upgrade it for much cheaper than any retail store would charge. Also, if this was within the company's return/refund period, go and talk to them about it, bringing any proof you have of the switch. Total RAM count (if over 4 GB) is a good indicator of the Win7 version you'd use.

ur both butts

no ur butt is a butt

Seconded. Dropbox is a godsend for this sort of situation. Automatically syncing to a folder on your hard drive is amazingly convenient.

Sorry you got screwed though :( Always good to know a guy "who's good with computers." - Like me, but hopefully closer.

That's exactly the problem, they installed Win7 32 on his 4GB machine.

Us computer programmers don't make friends easily.
We live in dark, secluded areas, preferably basements and always have an active line out to takeouts.

I've seen this rage comic several times on my Facebook Feed and thought to myself: No one would really do this would they?

Computer Programmers? Bah! You need to make friends with someone who does Desktop support. They can actually fix your PC if it breaks!

-Desktop Support Analyst who has to fix Programmers computers.

Wasn't even a shortcut I was copying, it was the original doc. Drag and drop from one folder to another, copy to external. No idea why it decided to break routine with a shortcut.

724149
yes my butt is a butt. what, you want to fight about it?

724219
Except for those programmers who actually started out in Help-desk areas. They still know their stuff. :ajsmug:

For free online backup I recommend Google Drive. You already have access to it if you have a GMail account and you can install an app that will automatically keep a folder in sync with you Google account and the first 5GB is free.

Also if you are not on a laptop, you could build a RAID-1 array (most modern motherboards have the option by default). If you have two identical drives you can set them up in a mirror and if one fails you just buy a new one. If you buy hotplug drives you don't even have to shut down your PC to replace the faulty one. If you have more than two identical drives you should go for RAID-5 which is more space efficient and still guards against the death of single drive.

You could also give Subversion a go, tho it's more advanced stuff. It's a file version control system, mostly used by programmers for source code control, but can be a great tool to keep multiple versions of the same file on a different drive both for both backup and for actual version control. You deleted a chapter 2 weeks ago and would like some parts back and have already overwritten all the copies with the new one? Well with a version control system you can recover any previous version of the file.

Well, I wish I could offer help, but I have nothing I could possibly offer.
So I offer my support, it that's any consolation.

Drag and drop from one folder to another, copy to external.

It probably created the shortcut when you dragged the file to the other folder because I'm an intelligent operating system and want to save you spaaaaace!. And then when you copied that folder... it's wasn't so "smart" anymore. Sorry for your/our loss :ajsleepy:

(Unless I misunderstood your quote, in which case I have no idea what happened there.)

Store your documents in dropbox(or the like). You can encrypt it with TrueCrypt(or the like) if you're paranoid.

Godspeed. :trollestia:

Ouch. My deepest sympathies.
Computers, they can be such a pain in the ass, but we love 'em. :raritywink:

I keep documents stored on my hard drive, Dropbox, AND google documents. So unless all three wipe simaltaneously...

So yeah. Storing your work on gdocs or Dropbox (or something similar) would probably allow you to rest a lot easier.

You should just bust into the computer store and say, "Bitches, I'm the author of Composure, a My Little Pony fan fiction! It has over ten thousand hits. I'm practically a celebrity! Gimme a discount!"

It'll totally work.

Trust me.

GoogleDocs/SkyDrive/DropBox...

Dropbox is your best friend, buddy. It saved my college projects many times because of my computer breakdown.:twilightsmile:

My parents tried to do this to copy her Internet Explorer. Now when people see me they ask if I was in a horrible car accident.

Seriously, who would want IE anyway?

725950 My dad for one! GAH. The amount of times he has complained about something in IE and the amount of times I have said: "Download Chrome, get Adblock" is just tiresome. And then he has the gall to occasionally tell me that a site didn't work in IE so he tried it in Chrome and "It worked great" but the next day he is still on bloody IE.

And what's made it worse is since mums got a new W8 Tablet I made their laptop a W8 too (consistency for the old people, especially mum) and rather than use anything else they mainly use Metro IE! I mean COME ON, Netscape had more features than Metro IE.

So I've done what any good IT Professional would do to a customer... "Sorry, I do not support this platform. To receive support for internet browsing related activities please download Google Chrome" ..... They kept using IE, I stopped giving help and they stopped asking.

Protip: Stop using Wandows. It is garbage.

Well, the alternative for me is to get a mac, and that would be supporting apple, and that would be wrong.

>fried HDD
Yeah, stuff happens, it's not like you can't re-download the porn and-

GOD DAMN
SHIT

...sorry.

There'd be no point in me using Linux at this point in time, as all I'd ever do with it is dual-boot it into Windows anyway.

Maybe in the future when I have time.

Ah...technology. Can't live with it, can't live without it. It truly is a love/hate relationship.

As far as us having to keep waiting, I could quote some famous person on it--something with Shakespeare, probably--but I'm too lazy to go google quotes on waiting right now. As it stands, you're working hard, and that's the important thing. Keep it up bro.
