Topic of The Week: Why Me and Several Other Adult Men Are Bronies by Evan Carlton Written on January 07, 2013
My name is Evan Warren Carlton and I am here to bring you the topic of the week.
Bronies are the adult male and teenage male fans of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic even though the term has become gender neutral as some of the female fans of all ages commonly referred to as pegasisters prefer to also call themselves bronies but why would anybody other than seven to ten year old girls which is who the target audience or demographic of the show was originally meant for be watching a show about colorful talking horses or in this case ponies who learn about the wonders and magic of friendship and occassionally break into song. Well i'm about to explain why with explanations and reasoning.
Explanations and Reasoning as to why the brony fandom even exist.
On October 10, 2012 a new channel was aired and started showing on cable t.v. this channel is called The Hub since the day it first started airing on t.v. The Hub channel has shown both new cartoons and several classic cartoon shows from the 80's and 90's and early 2000's with the exception of Super Hero Squad Show and Transformers Animated both of which before being shown on The Hub were shown on Cartoon Network, Super Hero Squad Show (the only Marvel superhero show that I have no interest in) was shown from 2008-2011 and Transformers Animated was shown from 2007-2009 but we're not here to talk about those shows so let's get back on topic.
Anyway as I was saying The Hub Channel aired on t.v. on October 10, 2010 and since the day it first aired The Hub Channel has shown both new shows and shows from the 80's, 90's and early 2000's with two exceptions but anyway October 10, 2010 was also the day that part one of the two part series premire of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic also premired on t.v. and shortly after the airing of Episode 1 Friendship is Magic part one first premired the negative reviews starting coming in on discussion boards/ forums and news websites, rather than turning people away from this show like with the previous crappy and extremely girly versions of My Little Pony that came before people started becoming interested in checking the show out to see what was so bad about it and several teenage boys and men in there 20's and older started checking out the show and actually like it alot to the point were they became fans of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and thus the brony fandom was born.
What's so great about this show anyway?
Now I bet you're wondering what's so great about this show anyway that draws both men and women to this show anyway well i'm going to tell you.
While men and teenage boys watching this show or even women and teenage girls watching this show and become fans of it is against the norms of society that say that boys and men should like cars, superheroes and videogames and girls should like dresses, make up, glitter and well ponies My Little Pony Friendship is Magic is more than just a simple and I quote girls show, the creator of the show Lauren Faust once said in a interview I want My Little Pony Friendship is Magic too become something that little girls can enjoy with their parents as in mom and dad if I can put so much as a dent in the idea that a show for little girls equals crappy or not worthwhile then I will be happy. Trust me Lauren you've made more than a small little dent you've changed the lives of so many people of all ages it also helps that she worked with her husband Craig Mccracken on popular Cartoon Network shows The Powerpuff Girls and Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends which were also popular which people of all ages as well as the fact that both the background music in the show composed by William Anderson and lyrical music composed by Daniel Ingram who also composes music for Littlest Pet Shop another show that is shown and aired on The Hub channel are extremely catchy and amazing, the show has references and subtle nods to various other forms of media from other cartoon shows to movies and real life non cartoon shows that little girls wouldn't get or understand but older viewers with easily be able to understand the show also has interesting and cute characters, villains, monsters from Greek Mythology and mention of Tartarus also from Greek Mythology , various funny and comedic lines and moments and most importantly the show has really great and exceptional voice acting.
