Before you read Ghost of Grogar... · 3:18am May 4th
There's some music I recommend you listen to before you read the first chapter of "The Ghost of Grogar" which goes live tomorrow May 4th at noon.
I present to you "The Accident" by James Horner:
This track is from an obscure animated 90s movie named "Once Upon a Forest", and it still haunts me to this day. Early in this film, an old badger named Cornelius and young "furling" children are out exploring and learning about the forest, when a truck nearby carrying toxic chemicals runs over broken glass and tumbles down a steep bank. The driver survives but the tank leaks out gas which immediately kills some of the flora and fauna in the forest. After seeing some birds fleeing the forest, Cornelius realizes something is wrong. They return to the area where all their families live, only to find it has been evacuated. Cornelius's niece Michelle worries and runs to find her parents, only to walk into their home and breathe in the gas, nearly dying. She is saved by Abigail, a brave mouse girl, who quickly takes her outside. The rest of the film is about Abigail and her other two friends, Russell and Edgar going off to find a plant that can cure Michelle before she succumbs to the effects of the gas. That music starts moments before the accident and ends right after everyone takes Michelle back to Cornelius's home. I can't find any clips on YouTube that show this scene in it's entirety, but I recommend giving the film a try. It's available to buy on YouTube and I'm sure there are DVDs on eBay.
Tomorrow, the first chapter of Ghost of Grogar will start with a bit of a flashback prologue scene, and that music should help evoke the right feelings when reading it. Of course we all know James Horner was a musical genius, and this music proves it. There are moments when it gets frantic, only to be followed up by loud trumpets and symbols booming right in your ears. Without knowing what happens in this film, the music still tells you something bad is happening. The part that gets me the most is the eerie chorus of people humming. It should help you feel the horror of what is going to happen in tomorrow's chapter. Of course after the prologue, we switch over to a more happy setting in Ponyville, but the chapter ends with a brief scene that has the same atmosphere as the prologue.
There will be several more scenes throughout this story that make me think of "The Accident", and you should be able to spot them easily. You're welcome to find any similar music and listen to that to prepare you for what happens.
