STORY UPDATE: Iron Giant Werewolf AU · 7:22am January 9th

A twig snapped before Hogarth could disagree.

They spun around at the sound, trying to locate its source. There was nothing in the direction they came from, as well as the road ahead. They turned toward the woods. The darkness between the trees seemed to have grown darker, and the air felt a little colder.

There was a menacing presence amongst those trees — something dangerous… something unnatural. Hogarth could’ve sworn he saw eyes moving in those woods. That uncertain feeling grew heavier with every breath.

He swallowed. It didn’t matter whether they returned home or continued to Griffin’s. They needed to leave… now.

“Let’s get outta here,” he said softly, turning to his brother.

Before he could get a response, Heath’s eyes went wide and he suddenly shoved him to the ground. Hogarth landed hard on his back as something fast and large flew over his head. Heath’s terrified screams pierced the air as the thing crashed into him and dragged him away into the woods.

And then silence engulfed the area once again. Hogarth quickly got to his feet, searching the shadows for any sign of movement.

“Heath?” he called out, moving closer to the trees. “Heath?”

Nothing.

“Heath!” He called out again, his breathing growing heavy. This couldn’t be happening, it just couldn’t. Any minute his brother was going to walk out of those woods, safe and unharmed. “Heathcliff?!”

There was a faint blood-curdling scream, like someone being attacked.

Heathcliff!” Hogarth ran into the woods, following the direction of the scream.

His camera thumped against his chest as he ran, perfectly in rhythm with his racing heart. Leaves crunched under his feet as he maneuvered around trees and over rocks.

After a while, he finally stopped in his tracks. He looked around in all different directions, trying desperately to listen to his surroundings. But there was nothing — just silence. Why was there only silence? Did that mean…?

“Where are you? Where are you?” he repeated, running his hands through his hair. Heath had to be okay, right? The silence meant nothing… right?

Hogarth kept searching around the area, panic setting in. He couldn’t figure out if he should continue running or start screaming. Heath had to be okay, he just had to. He turned to his left and stared off into the distance, fresh sorrow infecting his entire being. What if Heath wasn’t okay?

He turned to his right and something smacked him across the face.

Crying out, the impact sent him flying through the air and crashing hard into the ground. It was a few moments before he weakly sat up on his knees.  His vision blurred, and blood dripped from his nose as he wheezed.

A gust of hot air blew in his face and he froze.

Hogarth looked up. His brain couldn’t fully comprehend what he was looking at. It looked like something from a nightmare… No, he thought. It was a nightmare.
