Twelve years ago, in between helping my parents prepare for our family's annual Christmas Eve party, high school-sophomore Bandy snuck off to indulge in something he'd never done before: read fanfiction. He hopped online to EquestriaDaily, where, for the previous few weeks, he'd kept tabs on the latest season of MLP and poured over drawfriend posts. There he navigated over to a site he'd heard of in passing but never seen with his own two eyes: Fimfiction.net.
The first story he came across was "I'll be Home for Hearth's Warming" by Incredible Blunderbolt. He read the story, which promptly dismantled him. Then he read the comments, where dozens of readers shared how the story similarly impacted them. The comments stuck in his mind as much as the story. Dang, he thought, these people are really into this stuff. I'll bet I could write something this good.
Happy twelve year anniversary, kid. You got one thing right.
