Y'know, this is specifically one of my all-time recurrent problems, even at my better days as a writer. There's always that one detail that just eludes me. I try to write around it, leaving it for later. But it eventually becomes that one thing that doesn't let me advance.
Now, I don't want to spoil it for you guys, because part of The Experiments is the experimental narrative, which includes the 'first reading' being unpredictable. But I also really want to deliver this chapter before the weekend you you can enjoy (and get more attention dopamine on my end).
So, let's loose some footing to get a strike: Having in mind the precedents of Twilight staying an alicorn and Applejack turning into a minotaur, what species would you expect Rainbow to become if given any choice?
And I do mean any choice. If someone has "Rodan from Godzilla" or "Battlecat from He-Man", I'm all ears to why you got that conclusion.
Some kind of eagle fits your story probably
Or if you're leaning into the body horror aspect with your story, some eldrich sky jellyfish maybe.

Yeah, I keep circling back to birds. At a point, I was thinking she would be so fast, she's constantly in movement, like the Kingdom Come Flash, which takes imagery from Hermes, so back to birds. How does 'harpy' sound?
Jellyfish doesn't strike me for Rainbow. Though, the idea does have its merits.

Hmm how about a sky(wind and lightning+ what ever other weather phenomenons ya like) phoenix hippogriff? Essentially make her a large hippogriff with elemental attributes like her wings consist of bones and crystal feathers Incase in a storm. Her tail feathers made from Semi solid snow and rain. Her main body has constantly shifting from wind and lightning on it.
If ya feeling fancy a pseudo sun in her chest aria for fire.

That does sound fancy alright. I was picturing something more 'primal' than 'esoteric', but the idea that rainbow became
athe storm sounds pretty appealing. It already hit home to what I already had so far and has a thematic resonance with how Applejack was presented in their own chapter.5758153
What's more primal then a force of natural desaster given form. Granted I may have made it sound more like a cosmetic change then it actually should be.
My idea is she essentially becoming an elemental that represents storm, blizzard or any weather phenomenons you can think of. (well maybe minus volcanos). It why I suggested hippogriff since in MLP they connected to all nature in a sense being of the sky, ocean and land by they nature.
