It's dev hell, but horsefic! · 1:03am Sep 25th, 2023
I should learn to make no promises.
Progress is happening on the big fic, so to speak, but it is in the form of sweeping revisions.
I had a bit of a crisis in the middle of writing chapter 4 when I realized something was a bit off. Later I realized that that off feeling I was getting was a pretty serious issue in my story planning which rotted the very core of everything I had done so far. I had mentioned this issue prior, but it has turned out much, much worse than I thought.
Turns out, after detailed interrogation of my world, characters, specific settings, you name it, it needed a bit more than just a "rework."
I needed to restart chapters 1, 3, and 4 from scratch, and do sweeping revisions to most of chapter 2.
Turns out, not only was the world lacking, the world only amounted to one event really. I was writing scenes in a vacuum. Worse, I later found out that one of my characters was introduced in a faulty way and left acting far more one-dimensional than should ever be acceptable. I've gone from a few scenes that need reworking to only a few scenes which will survive mostly intact.
Am I discouraged? Admittedly, a little. This past while I have been taking some time away from the fic to process what is ahead of me and just cope with the fact that most of the words I have put down are going straight to my "cut sections" doc. Do I think my time wasted? Absolutely not. I still remember how a lot of ideas sprung up only once I wrote some of those rudimentary scenes, and how this whole thing has been quite the learning process for me. That, if nothing else, will stick with me, and hopefully I'll see myself on the other side of having written this exposition leg of the fic confident that I have a foundation which can hold the rest of my plans for the later happenings in a fitting and (hopefully) poetic context.
I am making a point to not be a perfectionist. This is horsefic, after all, which is quite possibly one of the safest training grounds one could have as an author of any kind. However, I do want it to be a demonstration of what I can do when I commit to something.
There is, however, a possibility of something else being released prior to the beginning of the big fic. I have devised a series of short stories which take place within the same world, which are meant to be little "breaks" in the writing of this beast of a fic. While they will be in the same world, they'd be disconnected from the main story almost entirely, so that I can just forget all these crazy lore decisions and drama planning and conspiracy-theorist level demented web diagrams and just be in the universe for a little while. I say the likelihood I'll be needing to write the first prior to the release of the first four main chapters is quite likely, so if indeed you do see it pop up first, consider it a little appetizer.
Anyway, enough rambling. I've got tests this week :/

fanfictions can be just as good (if not better) than published books, and this kind of dedication is why. Keep it up, stay motivated, and these efforts alone will create a top tier horsefic! 0c0
