I am currently reading and loving Flygon's stories. (That there are only two is tragic...but! They. are. so. good! So, who cares! ; ) )
Fateful Flurry is a gorgeous story of a fifteen year old boy arriving in equastria! After, being turned into Flurry Heart!! But! Wait, I say! This is not gratuitous wish fulfillment (tm). This story is about found family and...well...I don't want to spoil it! I will just say that it's a lovely, feel good fish out of water? fish in the snow? (Perhaps) story that oozes charm ,and just gets you smiling with every update! (Also, occasionally, you get lovely artwork!!!)
Give it a try! 
Misplaced Wings is what you get when you throw something new! Yes! New! at the human-turned-into-x train! It's well written and charming slice of life with a focus on hurt in the first half...after all being the first alicorn?...kirin can be very confusing! Let alone being a colt on top of it!
If you liked the first recommendation and a under utilized creatures from canon then, give this a whirl! 
Bonus! Recommendation
Greenhornes, Excellent Trust Once Lost is filled with heart and heart related knowledge! If! you could not get enough squishy pony goodness and you perchance needing a pick me up! This is your jam! I will say though, you do feel the hurt in this one. This one also has artwork!
