Watched the new series of episodes. · 9:26am Jun 9th, 2023
Going to have to say that “opaline touches grass and does more in 3 episodes than every evil act Misty attempts in the show, and is a true blue alicorn” weren’t on my bingo card but rad. Celestia and Luna as foals and the whole “alicorn nation of Skyros” is odd but I like the idea- and with how much opaline is an unreliable narrator who lies and schemes, I’m fine with the sisters acting off.
Alicorn edgelord of fire probably just got incredibly jealous and held a grudge for what 10000 years lol. I thought it was that she hated twilight. Nope grudge match against two alicorns that literally never mentioned her ever (note that I know g4 came out before this, but the idea that opaline held a grudge for thousands of years and celestia and Luna never realized.)
Also rad: Anytime Haven and Alphabittle were on screen, they cute. Incredibly unbelievably into one another and actually made out in the background but cute.
And Sprout being Sprout. I am a mark for Sprout.
I saw those G1 references in the bridlewoodstock ep- terrible name lol- and the Dreamland ponies are the best designed characters in the show imo.
Pipp dyeing her wings- yes I know it and the manesquerade ball were probably toy designs- but they looked so good I don’t care. I’m just glad Misty got a decent character arc and she wore her butterfly mask from the g5 shorts love that mask.
I was stumped on how to do a hitch and pipp episode and then episode 2 hard confirmed pipp is into like everything spooky and scary. If she literally wasn’t anti-goth in her aesthetic, I’d expect her to do blood rituals and summon demons for the internet clout- or more likely be a ghost hunter now.
Seriously this batch of episodes made me like Pipp way more. Like I liked her before, but she went from likable if “clout goblin influencer” at times to a really goofy character that convinced haven that the palace was haunted because she felt like it and had an entire rarity session breakdown in the double length episode- and that’s before she got sick which was adorable.
I think the royal family in g5 is just so fun- though finding out that zipp is a massive fantasy nerd was endearing.
And again, Misty continues to be best character lol. Just wanted to say that again cause she was a blast.
In short, any g5 writing is still on track and nothing has been massively affected so I count that as a win. And the roadblock I had on a hitchpipp story is mostly gone now thanks to all the random stuff we learned about the royal family lol.
In short while I had issues with the last batch of episodes- no I also thought the winter special had issues too, these episodes were much more solid and had a whole character arc
Notably, an alicorn nation from which the Sisters originated was previously mentioned in passing in the books. This is the sort of deep cut I expect from our better writers, not the actual show's.

Interesting I haven’t read much of the books since I tend towards the comics and shorts and the show itself and rarely touch those books so rather neat that they seem to be doing way more with G5 than what I at first expected from part 2 in particular

MLP continuity, insofar as it exists at all (not very far), seems to go by writer rather than medium for reasons that were touched on in the linked blog. GM Berrow, who wrote most of the books, was eventually moved onto the show staff and I've heard has a significantly greater role in G5.
